11th ANNUAL BACK UP FILM FESTIVAL LAST CALL

March 30th 2009 06:10
The 11th Back up film festival is sending out its final call for entries to this year’s event with only 2 days to go until final acceptances on April 1. Taking place in Weimar, Germany from May 21-24, the festival aims to break out of the usual categorizations recognised in some of the more ‘prestigious’ festivals to give artists more of an opportunity to showcase their works on an international level. Moving the dates

The organisers are looking for short films and videos that ‘reflect and define the boundaries and possibilities of the cinematic format through the creative use if different production methods and modes of expression’ with the aim to produce a unique hybrid form of cinema through the interplay of media with new and differing techniques influencing not only the narrative structure, but also the production and distribution process. With no films completed before January 1 2008 accepted, the team at Backup is concentrating on supporting emerging artists gain recognition for their ground breaking techniques.

Alongside the short film award, Backup is also looking for new, innovative music videos that combine the usual music and motion picture format looking once again to new creative techniques not usually seen in today’s clips. With a little more leeway given to this category with entries allowed to have been completed as far back as January 1 2007, the opportunity presented to new artists and producers is almost unlimited.

A new addition is the addition of a competition for international features. The festival has included extended length film premieres as part of their event to support and promote the potential and talent of young film makers. The organisers are looking for films that ‘link different genres and formats, respectively and suggest methods to pass the boundaries of genre’ thereby attempting to break new ground in the motion picture industry ‘in accordance with a present day view of Bauhaus in Weimar’. With this being the first time that the festival has moved away from shorts, the challenge has been issued to all and sundry to discover and produce new modes and forms of expression and new ways to produce and distribute the film makers works. While these films are limited to 60 minutes in length, this still allows an enormous amount of scope for producing outstanding new and experimental styles and techniques in cinema.

With a panel of judges consisting of known filmmakers, television professionals and producers, designers and theorists, awards will be presented to the best works submitted during the festival. All works submitted are also asked to include a copy for preview, stills, list of dialogue, synopsis, biographies and filmographies that are relevant.

In a recent press release, the festival organisers described their festival as a way “to encourage a discourse about films, formats and festivals reflecting the current developments and aiming to find and support artistic works and exceptional approaches to the medium film.’

So if you have a completed film that stretches the boundaries of cinematic techniques and genres and aren’t sure where to get it seen, head straight to the Backup website and download all the information you need. Then get down to you local post. Your time is running out!
