MIFF “Not Quite Hollywood”

July 28th 2008 07:03
(Last Friday night saw the opening of the 57th Melbourne International Film Festival with the highly anticipated NOT QUITE HOLLYWOOD a serious exploration of the OZploitation of Australian Cinema during the boom period of the 70’s and 80’s when Australian films were exported to all corners of the globe. Rarely mentioned in official cinema histories, these two decades produced some of the most successful Australian films of all time, catapulting Filmmakers and Actors onto the International stage with stars such as Mel Gibson and Judy Davis as well as Directors Bruce Beresford, Gillian Armstrong, George Milller, Fred Schepisi and Peter Weir amongst others eventually moving overseas to take advantage of this infatuation with this ‘new’ antipodean film phenomenon.Featuring interviews with celebrity devotee Quentin Tarantino, Not Quite Hollywood is a fast-moving journey through a very Australian slice of genre cinema.

“To open our festival with a Premiere Fund Film in the first year of its operation is obviously a historic and important moment for us. Mark Hartley’s film is a rigorous and serious film exploring an untold story of Australian film but it’s also tremendously entertaining – I can’t wait to feel the audience reaction to its World premiere screening”, said Executive Director Richard Moore

This Sunday the Chauvel Cinema will be screening THE GREAT ESCAPE at 4pm upstairs at the Paddington Town Hall.
If you have never seen this classic on the big screen, you'd be a fool not to get out of the house or pub and head on down to catch Steve McQueen ( not the director of HUNGER fame) but the other great Steve and all his mates as they make their bid for freedom.

In December 2004, you may have walked in front of the camera during the filming of The Ballad of Betty & Joe in Central Railway’s Devonshire Street Tunnel and made it into the film. Or you may have been one of 150 extras who danced wildly out of the tunnel into the city. At last, the film is finished but, regrettably, we have lost touch with some of you. So if you remember having been in the midst of our filming, claim your fifteen seconds of fame by showing up at our fabulous cast and crew party, Wednesday, July 23. Identify yourself on screen, and get your free DVD. For information on the venue and entry into what promises to be a unique launch party, contact: judex@zipworld.com.au or Rivka Hartman 93494934.

The Ballad of Betty & Joe is a silent comedy, with music by leading blues/jazz artist and screen composer Jan Preston. It features veteran actor Tony Barry as Joe and Alice Ansara as Betty and was directed by industry stalwart Martha Ansara. Alice will be seen later this year in the new SBS comedy series Bogan Pride, playing Nigella, the best friend of Rebel (“Toula”) Wilson of Fat Pizza fame. Mic Conway of the National Junk Band makes a guest appearance in the film
