Budgets released for SCREEN AUSTRALIA

August 26th 2008 17:30
SCREEN AUSTRALIA has released its new updated version of A-Z Budgets for features films and documentaries on its website. For any budding filmmakers out there, this is a perfect way to help realise your dream as the templates provided within the new package extremely useful for those trying to evaluate and assess the expense involved in producing a feature film. Although primarily set up to assist in calculating Australian Production expenditure, the document itself lends itself to providing a much needed tool for those wishing to produce their own films and documentaries. While not every page may be relevant for each different situation, this document also gives an insight into just how much attention is needed not only in the creative process, but also with regards to the importance of managing a sound budget.

With the templates developed with highly experienced individuals the attention to detail along with the Frequently Asked Questions supplement should be enough to assist even the most inexperienced filmmaker and producer .

August 26th 2008 07:27
If you thought censorship in the western world can be a little prudish at times, try making a living as an actor or actress in Iran.

State authorities have banned 25 year old actress Golshifteh Farahani from leaving the country after it was found out that she starred in the new Ridley Scott film ‘Body of Lies’ opposite Hollywood favourites Russell Crowe and Leonardo Di Caprio according to the official new agency IRNA. In a song infused with rhythmic drum beats Snoop Dogg raps away with "I'm just a king sitting on my throne all alone. Singh is King. Singh is King. Snoop Dogg is also the King."
The video, which took just three days to shoot in Chicago shows Snoop dressed in a maroon slim-fitted Indian kurta and beige trousers and a diamond-studded turban, lounging on an oversized armchair draped with blue and pink silk alongside Akshay Kumar, the movie's lead star

August 20th 2008 07:46
Below is an edited press release from the 9th Italian Film Festival ready to roll in Australia in September and October. With a retrospective on the great Federico Fellini, and some intermingling of out and out Italian idols combined with some rising stars, you can look forward to nearly three weeks of romance, combined with a little intrigue and corruption.

Not since the glory days of Fellini and Antonioni has Italian cinema enjoyed such a creative and critically acknowledged resurgence, with films like Paolo Sorrentino¹s witty political expose IL DIVO, Andrea Molaioli¹s beguiling thriller THE GIRL BY THE LAKE (La Ragazza Del Lago), Silvio Soldini¹s family

When John L Simpson and Michael Joy got together to create the award winning film ‘Men’s Group’ they had little more to work with than a few tales and an idea of what the concept would be. This meant their choice of actors for this ensemble piece would have to be chosen very carefully if their ideas were to bear fruition.

The film had to be filmed in chronological order to maintain the sense of realism that was crucial to the success of the film and it was during the filming of one of these scenes that Simpson and Joy realized what a considerable movie their concept had become and how well they had chosen their cast. At one stage shooting had to stop completely as one of the actors so fully immersed in character had to take a few hours to get things back together again after a startling revelation about one of the characters was revealed.

Portman flirts with Bollywood.

August 15th 2008 00:08
(Photo: chinadaily.com.cn/Agencies)
BEIJING, July 25 -- Recently reported in the press for leaving industry bosses up in arms after walking out on her role as ‘Cathy’ in Emily Bronte’s classic WUTHERING HEIGHTS, Natalie Portman has taken a break from Hollywood and moved to the land of Bollywood to play a princess in her boyfriend Devendra Banhart's new music video.
The Star Wars and V for Vendetta actress - who has been dating the Venezuelan folk singer since April - wears full Indian costume, complete with a bindi, and must be saved from peril by Devendra's "rebellious beard" in the promo for Carmensita. The video is very tongue-in –cheek with Natalie pouting, giggling and fluttering her eyelashes before the video ends with her being reincarnated as an octopus.Subtitles appear at the bottom of the screen, including: "The princess whose golden beauty sang through the soul of heaven waited three full eclipses for her love to return."
Before getting involved with Devendra, Natalie was romantically linked to stars including Gael Garcia Bernal, Orlando Bloom and Jake Gyllenhaal

Film Vic commits $2mil in funding.

August 14th 2008 05:48
Just a little bit of money to assist Victorian Film and Television production, but once again it seems that the money is going primarily to established production companies and very little seems to be heading to the independents who seem to be creating the bulk of our success both here and overseas. Being unaware of how many independent filmmakers put proposals forward for funding, it is difficult to say whether Film Victoria is just playing it safe or not
Maybe next round the independents might be able to look forward to increased funding.
The Film Victoria board has announced commitment of over $2 million in funding at the last board meeting for the financial year. Thirteen projects were supported through the production investment, pilot for TV or digital media broadcast, and digital media prototyping programs

9 WAYS to become a Director?!

August 13th 2008 00:25
Here is an article I read recently in an email sent to me by one of the many film devotees out there on the world wide web. Maybe you might know a better way to make it to the top. I think what you really need is a strong belief in your own talent and a willingness to work hard.

There are nine routes to consider when launching your career as a director. Before you decide which route to take, research the careers of directors you admire and see if you can see which route they followed.remember, that there is no such thing as a route - only a route that is good for you: one that allows you to maximise you abilities and talent

With local audiences turning away from domestic films in droves over the last year, many are worried that this economic downturn could spell disaster for the once powerful film industry. And it seems that the almighty western might be the kick start needed to turn things around.

With an unusual summer blockbuster, a ‘Kimchi Western’ titled ‘The Good, The Bad and The Weird’ screening throughout South Korean cinemas, its is hoped this story about a bounty hunter, a bandit and a train robber could just be the catalyst they badly need. The story revolves around the three characters battling for possession of a valuable map of Northeastern China known as Manchuria during the Japanese occupation of the 1930’s.

Here are just two of the films making it on the international festival circuit at the moment. With some bemoaning the state of Australian features at the moment the independents continue to come to the fore without the big money of the major companies. With more support both in production and distribution, the Australian Film Industry could have a bright future. Without the support so desperately needed they still manage to punch above their weight.

How often do you walk out of the movies and cant wait to buy that amazing soundtrack that accompanied the action on screen? Well this weekend at the Britt Festival you can relive some of the great moments in cinema history with the Britt Orchestra as they perform so of the finest pieces in cinema history.
On August 8 and 9 the Britt Festival Orchestra presents "The Golden Age of the Silver Screen," a tribute to some of the greatest composers of movie soundtracks. When films were America's premiere source of entertainment their scores became a permanent part of America's musical landscape. The shower scene from Psycho, the swirling dissonance in the score for Vertigo and more.
These two concerts will feature the music of the composers of some of Hollywood's best film music at Britt Festival in Jacksonville. And if you cant make both nights, don’t worry as the tickets are available as a package or individually. And don’t forget there are a lot more entertaining evenings to attend as well during the month long festival

In April of this year, Amanda King and Fabio Cavadini, joint Heads of Documentary at Sydney Film School travelled to Bougainville to take part in the Pacific Black Box (PBB) project. Coordinated by Taloi Havini and Georgia McRae, who established PBB Inc in early 2008, this is an incredible environmental advocacy project aimed to equip the local youth from the Carteret Islands with the skills and resources needed to raise awareness of the fate of their island paradise homes through digital storytelling.

Although Pacific communities produce some of the lowest greenhouse gas emissions in the world, they are already suffering greatly from the effects of climate change. The Carteret Islands of Bougainville are sinking and the traditional land owners are currently preparing to relocate to escape the rising sea levels
