HOLLYWOOD is bleeding again!

It seems that no matter how much you earn it’s the same in any industry. Last year it was the writers wanting a bigger piece of the pie, and this year the actors are up in arms. Well at least after all the support they gave the writers last year, they should have them on their side. But when does it all end. The studios have met with the Screen Actors Guild for the firsttime in four months to try and make a dent in what has become a deadlock after contract talks broke down ealier this year.

Hollywood insiders have said this mediation could continue well into the new year with actors asking for more money from DVD sales plus a greater say in what products are endorsed on the screen.

Six Oz docs in Amsterdam

The prestigious International Documentary Festival of Amsterdam (IDFA) announced recently the selection of six Australian titles that reflect the diversity of Australian documentary filmmaking.

In My Father’s Country (d: Tom Murray) will screen in the First Appearance competition, where it will compete with 15 films for the First Appearance and IDFA Audience Awards. This screening will be the international premiere of the film. In 2007, director Robert Nugent received the First Appearance Award for his film

This year The Festivalists have once again done an outstanding job in organizing the 3rd annual Canadian Film Festival with 16 films on show over the week and 11 films making their Australian debut. Combining with some international festival favourites this fast growing addition to the Sydney festival circuit is sure to give everyone something to relish over the six days running from November 27 to December 2 across a very diverse roll of venues throughout Sydney.

The festival opens with Academy Award® winning director Denys Arcand’s (The Barbarian Invasions) DAYS OF DARKNESS, a cerebral comedy focusing on Western Society. This from the same man who brought us Jesus of Montrealand The Decline of the American Empire. Immediately following is MY WINNIPEG which ran <i>In Competition</i> at this years Sydney Film Festival.

Cannes scouts preparing for 09

As we approach the beginning of the major awards season with the Golden Globes, BAFTAs and Academy Awards ceremonies, Cannes is also gearing up as they begin to prepare their line-up for the 2009 Festival and Awards ceremony. Scouts are now packing their bags (that is if the ever get the chance to unpack) and heading off to all corners of the earth in search of original and eye-catching films.

Christian Jeune, Deputy General Delegate and Australian scout for Cannes Official Selection (In Competition, Out of Competition and Un Certain Regard) will return to Australia in early December 2008.
