2008 KIT DENTON FELLOWSHIP
April 22nd 2008 06:51
Applications are now open for the 2008 $25,000 Kit Denton Fellowship, presented by the Australian Writers' Foundation (AWF) with the generous support of Zapruders' Other Films.
The Kit Denton Fellowship, named in honour of the late father of media personality Andrew Denton, is to reward courage and excellence in performance writing and allows a writer to develop a project to be ready to present to market.
Kit Denton, a life time member of the Australian Writers’ Guild, was a scriptwriter, author, poet and lyricist. He is best known for The Breaker, his international best selling novel about the trial and execution of Breaker Morant. The criterion of the Fellowship was suggested by Andrew to reflect the courage and creativity of Kit’s own work.
Courage can be defined as independence of thought, questioning the status quo, and an attitude of mind in facing diversity with self possession, perseverance and resolution.
Ian David was named as the inaugural Kit Denton Fellow at the 2007 AWGIE Awards.
Ian is best known for his ground-breaking reality-based dramas Police State and Police Crop, which won AFI Awards in 1989 and 1999, and the AWGIE Award winning Joh's Jury. Ian’s Fellowship project is a 13-part TV series about the law, and its relationship, if any, to justice and is now close to completion.
Ian was selected from a shortlist which included playwright Afeif Ismail Abdelrazig, a Sudanese refugee and ex-political prisoner; writer of the award winning film and book Candy, Luke Davis; playwright and human rights lawyer Suzie Miller; playwright Stephen Sewell;playwright and screenwriter Katherine Thomson; playwright Tee O'Neill and writing and production team Sabour Bradley and Claire Atkins.
