The 11th Back up film festival is sending out its final call for entries to this year’s event with only 2 days to go until final acceptances on April 1. Taking place in Weimar, Germany from May 21-24, the festival aims to break out of the usual categorizations recognised in some of the more ‘prestigious’ festivals to give artists more of an opportunity to showcase their works on an international level. Moving the dates

The organisers are looking for short films and videos that ‘reflect and define the boundaries and possibilities of the cinematic format through the creative use if different production methods and modes of expression’ with the aim to produce a unique hybrid form of cinema through the interplay of media with new and differing techniques influencing not only the narrative structure, but also the production and distribution process. With no films completed before January 1 2008 accepted, the team at Backup is concentrating on supporting emerging artists gain recognition for their ground breaking techniques.

Summer Hours is the story of a family separated not just by geography, but by the different paths each has followed in their personal lives. Returning home after the death of their mother, the three siblings must now confront these differences, shared memories and what the future now holds.

Olivier Assayas creates an emotive portrait of a family immersed in a culture and history that now holds no relevance to their lives, where beauty is locked away and sanitized, so that no one can connect. Long gone the sibling’s childhood, now they struggle to deal with the realities that their mother’s death has bequeathed them and the choices they must make that will effect future generations.

New series to employ 330 people

March 16th 2009 04:23

A new drama series is set to begin filming early next month in and around Sydney creating jobs for over 300 industry professionals over the next 6 months. Based on the themes that have performed well on commercial television over the years, the series is set to concentrate on two brothers who are members of the Special Operations Rescue Unit. Of course the two are extremely competitive which will obviously lead to narrowly averted disaster scenarios and confusing love triangles as the boys try to get the better of each other each week, but surely after two decades of similar shows the likes of POLICE RESCUE, FIREFLIES etc, it might be time to try and look at this from a different perspective. With filming still in the pre-production stage, lets hope the writers and producers take a few risks and try something new.

2009 FILMINK AWARDS

March 12th 2009 06:20
The 2009 FILMINK Awards will be announced at the Australian Film Television and Radio Schools brand new complex deep in the heart of the Entertainment Quarter at Moore Park on Wednesday March 18 in what is for the first time an invitation only event for those involved within the industry itself.

While this may put some fans noses a little out of place, the organisers have gone to great pains to stress that the evening will be streamed live to anyone who has access to the internet. And as the celebrity invitees stroll down the red carpet at the beginning of the evening, fans will still be able to cheer for their own personal favourites outside.

Blockbuster and Sonic Solutions announced a multi-year agreement that will have the former deliver its library of digital movies and shows to home and portable electronics devices with Internet connectivity and Sonic software. The companies will also merge their digital libraries – including Sonic's recently purchased CinemaNow – and offer them under the Blockbuster brand, to create one of the largest VOD services on the market.
The service will be available on numerous devices from yet unnamed hardware manufacturers of HTPCs, portable media players, Blu-ray disc players, PVRs, set-top boxes, cellphones and Internet-enabled HDTVs, and will include Sonic's current CinemaNow partners. Sonic's CinemaNow SDK will allow for the quick introduction of the service into devices with Mac and Windows based operating systems, allowing users to view content via adaptive streaming and progressive downloads.

Australian films earned just $35.5 million dollars at the box office amounting to just 3.8% of the $945.5m total box office takings at cinemas over 2008. Adding to this singularly worrying statistic, of that $35.5M, $26.9M or 76% of that came from the Box Office takings for AUSTRALIA leaving less than $8.6M to be shared amongst every other Australian film in the country. With THE BLACK BALLOON ($2.3M) and the Chinese/Australian co-production CHILDREN OF THE SILK ROAD ($1.2M) taking another 10%, it becomes easy to see why we are struggling to compete with overseas productions released domestically. BATMAN THE DARK KNIGHT returned more than the entire domestic box office on its own which took the honour of highest grossing film of the year, and also earned a place as one of the top 10 highest grossing films of all times in Australia. Add to this, AUSTRALIA was primarily an American funded film and most of the profits from this film will probably never make its way back into our industry. If it manages to turn a net profit at all.

A quick poll carried out last week with friends and associates revealed an alarming aversion to seeing Australian Films. One comment made was that the respondent didn’t really like the accents and the pictures just always looked to ‘dirty’. When pressed to expand on this reasoning, the pollee (if there is such a word) was unable to describe exactly what it was that he didn’t like only that he preferred American films. Others stated that they were either too apathetic to even bother going to the movies as they could always wait until it came out on DVD or that if they were going to spend $15 on a movie that wanted to be assured that they would get their value for money.

Opening night went boom!

March 7th 2009 06:21
Opening Night was a fantastic success, the crowd was buzzing and the conversation flowing about the intense, amazing shorts that were screened. The crowd at BEV even had a chance to graba spot of dancing. .

Sally Hawkins, Rahcel and Gurindha Chadha
Actresses Sally Hawkins and Hayley Atwell, and our patrons Gurindha Chadha, Steven Woolley and Sarah Radclyffe all turned up and were brilliant and inspiring. Mary Harron fought the jet-lag and popped down for a celebratory drink after arriving from New York for her Masterclass and Retrospective this weekend. We asked her some quick questions for our blog before the big Q&As on the weekend... We can't wait
