Amnesia

June 25th 2009 15:55
An article in the newsletter from raindance caught my attention tonight. As a fan of Kenneth Branagh who I don't seem to see on the screen as often as I think he should be has a new film about to be released. Please don't compare him with greats of yesteryear like Olivier ( who may have been a great stage actor, but I personally dont think a great film actor - too melodramatic) or Ralph Richardson or John Geilgud. Branagh has his own style and should be recognised accordingly.

The Oscar nominee actor and director Kenneth Branagh best known for his rendition of the Shakespeare inspired films -Henry V and Hamlet, stands center stage at Raindance this week

Having played already at a multitude of film festivals, I am hoping it gets a general release here in Australia after having recent been selected to screen at the Sydney Film Festival to sold out audiences. Try and get out to see it if you get a chance. I missed it at the festival, but will be keeping my eyes peeled.

Included is a bried synopsis and a link to the films trailer.

Aussie Box Office Figures.

June 17th 2009 04:19
This time we have a look at the Australian Box Office for the week ending today. While not as in depth as the American Box Office I try to post each week, it does give you some idea of what films we are watching in Australia. When you convert the figures, Australia's population is approximately 10% that of the USA. So in my calculations (which are normally out there a bit), 1 Aussie dollar is equivalent to 10 at the US box Office for bums on seats.

I have also included the top ten films at the box office for all time and also the top ten Australian films at the box office all time. The only one that makes both lists is the 80's classic Crocodile Dundee which is pretty bloody impressive by Hoges.

Indian Filmmakers divided over OZ

June 9th 2009 08:00
It seems the Aussies are definitely not the flavour of the month with Indian Filmmakers with a majority saying that they could not work in a country where their countrymen have suffered recently from a spate of violent attacks. A recent arson attack on cars located in a well known Indian student community has strengthened the calls for the government to upgrade their investigations into these racist attacks.

Closed communities have always been an issue in Australia whether the group are Asian, Indian, Italian or Lebanese, it doesn’t matter. When groups decide to stay within their own culture and community, there is always a minority group that decides to take things into their own hands. Most Australians condemn these attacks on the Indian community while some have questioned their refusal to assimilate into Aussie society including members if Indian cultural groups within Australia.

Now its an ALIEN prequel.

What is it with the studios these days. Having run out of original ideas, everyone is jumping on the prequel bandwagon. X-men, Terminator, Star Trek and now Alien have all headed toward the what happened before everything else happened scenario in their quest to make money. And who can blame them. By last Monday, Terminator- Salvation had cashed in $92,657,197 at the US Box office, X-Men - Origins is now at $171,227,696 and Star Trek is sitting on a cool $210,586,019 according to the latest figures from boxofficemojo.com

So now what's coming to a screen near you (maybe not for a year or two). A prequel to Ridley Scott's sci-fi classic Alien is in the works, according to the director's brother Tony.
