Meanwhile although Harry number 6 continues to earn more than its previous five frachise films , ORDER OF THE PHOENIX has out-earned THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE for 7 of its 8 days in release. Could Harry be losing his magic touch?

Overview of cinema release

The cinema release of a feature film continues to be important to its overall success. The initial release period, along with the marketing and advertising campaign that accompanies it, and the response from both critics and audiences, will often greatly influence the value of the feature in other media and in other territories around the world. This remains the case despite the increasing contributions to revenue of other media, such as DVD, as well as shorter initial release periods.

STATE OF PLAY - AFTRS

July 15th 2009 05:55
How will the traditionally passive cinema experience change in the next few years. Stereoscopic 3D films are becoming commonplace alongside specialised 3D Imax outings and in the past few months we have experienced Monsters vs Aliens, Up, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Coraline, My Bloody Valentine. Dreamworks have committed to producing all CG films in 3D and there are new releases planned over the next 6 months including Avatar, The Final Destination, re-release of Toy Story 1 & 2. A Christmas Carol & Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. But what about more interactive cinema with games or social applications? Where does the future lie for cinemas and other public screen spaces?

Australian films released in the first six months of 2009, their budgets and their takings at the box office thus far. Those in block are currently playing in cinemas now. Note that these are box office takings in Australia alone. With the limited overseas releases, it is often rare to see an Australian film recoup its budget. In a recent article in Australian Movie Mag FILMINK, Bruce Beresford discussed his 1979 classic whose budget was a mere AU$650,000 still took almost twenty years to make a profit. Is it any wonder that the industry continues to struggle with the lack of support from the locals!

Soon to be released CEDAR BOYS is definitely worth a trip to the movies as is the recently released BASTARDY and SAMSON AND DELILAH.

Upcoming releases include VAN DIEMANS LAND based on the 1822 escape of 8 convicts from the harsh penal settlement Macquarie Harbour and the brutalities that occured in the Tasmanian Wilderness as supplies dwindled and hunger sets in.
