THE IF AWARDS 2009 NOMINATIONS:

October 15th 2009 04:16
Well its almost time for this years IF Awards and the nominations are out. Dont be upset that there is no Maos Last Dancer. with the cut off dates all out of whack, Mao's is eligible for the AFI's this year but has to wait til next year to be eligible for the IF's.

Andrew L Urban from Urban Cinefile says" All current Australian films (features, short films, feature-length documentaries, short documentaries and short animations) that have screened publicly in a cinema or at an Inside Film Awards accredited film festival between 14 September 2008 and 18 September 2009 are eligible for the 2009 Inside Film Awards. While in the AFI Awards this year, the eligibility period has been extended: all films released in Australia for the first time between 2 October 2008 – 14 October 2009 are eligible – which means Mao’s Last Dancer (opened October 1, 2009) is eligible for AFI voting in 2009 but not for the If awards."

Screen Australia has announced that the feature film Samson & Delilah is Australia’s official entry for nomination consideration for Best Foreign Language Film at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards®.

To be eligible for consideration for the Best Foreign Language Film Award, a film must have been released in its country of origin for at least seven days and is defined by predominantly non-English dialogue. Each country can submit one film for nomination consideration. In 2009 there were two eligible Australian films: Van Diemen’s Land (w: Jonathan auf der Heide, Oscar Redding; d: Jonathan auf der Heide; p: Maggie Miles), which is largely in Gaelic, and Samson & Delilah. A committee of active industry professionals selected Samson & Delilah as the Australian film to be entered. Both films are screening nationally at the present time in Australia.

Screen Australia has confirmed it will provide production finance for the feature The Cup, the true story of the 2002 Melbourne Cup and young jockey Damien Oliver’s emotion-charged win. It has also announced support for four documentaries under the National Documentary Program, and five contemporary projects from young documentary makers under the Triple J TV Docs initiative with the ABC. Budgets for all these projects total $20.4 million.

The Cup will be directed by Simon Wincer, who is also producing the film with Jan Bladier and David Lee, and shares the writing credit with Eric O’Keefe. Greg Sitch and Lance Hool are executive producers. While Screen Australia initially approved the project in August 2008, it was required to return to be assessed under the new guidelines after a change of financing structure.

The festival, which takes place in Korea, has risen to prominence as the primary Asian launch pad for independent feature films, and is recognised as a key annual event on the festival circuit.

The Pusan invitation is the latest accolade for the films, which have already each attracted the attention of elite international festival programmers.
