2009 SAMSUNG MOBILE AFI AWARDS NOMINEES & WINNERS
December 14th 2009 14:29
Last weekend the Australian Film Industry held their night of nights at the Regent Theatre, Collins Street, Melbourne,Australia. Once again it was as the bookies predicted with no real surprises. Again the winners were SAMSON AND DELILAH which definitley deserves all the accolades it has recieved thus far and will continue to be feted around the world throughout the awards season.
The big problem though seems to be in the acting categories. It seems that unless you head overseas or come here as a visiting guest, you are not in with a chance. Anthony La Paglia and Rachel Griffiths might be great talents, but are we just rewarding them to make sure they make an occassional appearance on our shores. Frances O'Connor is also a great actress, but what about Emily Barclay, Maeve Dermody, Sacher Horler, Marissa Gibson, Sophie Lowe, Ben Mendelsohn and the entire cast of BALIBO. This is the AUSTRALIAN industry awards.
I know we try and encourage international cooperation in our industry, but we need to reward our local talent if we wish to ever build an industry that can compete even slighlty with the overseas films that take home more than 99% of the Box Office each year.
While we should support those who have gone on to big things across the ocean, lets support our local stars. With a bit more support they too might be able to break into the overseas markets and help spread the word about how good our industry really can be.
And one last rant - Why were there three nominees for highest grossing film. You either made more money than the others or you didn't. Its not a voting category!!!! Stupidity!
The AFI congratulates all nominees and winners for the 2009 Samsung Mobile AFI Awards. Below, please find a list of all nominees and winners for each AFI Award, presented at the 2009 Samsung Mobile AFI Awards Ceremony. Winners are highlighted in RED.
