PELICULA de ESPANOLE
This years Spanish Film Festival is all but ready to launch with an impressive gala opening night miercoles (Wednesday) May 6 in Sydney and screenings at Palace Academy Twin and Norton Street as well as the Chauvel in Paddington before opening in Canberra May 7 followed by Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and finally Perth. Tickets for the Sydney opening night have completely sold out.butthere are still very limited numbers around the other capital cities Tickets include TAPAS from El Bulli, LIVE entertainment by OJ PROJECT, DRINKS (from festival wine sponsor Torres Wines) and FILM, plus all attendees will also receive a CD with the best songs from WATUSSI.
Opening night honours go to the gourmet comedy Chef’s Special (Fuera De Carta) starring Javier Cámara in the role of Maxi, gay head chef and proud owner of Xantarella, an haute-cuisine restaurant in the trendy Madrid neighbourhood of Chueca. Maxi’s life and his attempts to earn a Michelin star for the restaurant are thrown into disarray by the sudden appearance of his teenage kids (the result of a sham marriage) and the arrival of an attractive Argentinean ex-footballer next door. The film was awarded the audience award and best actor at the Malaga Film Festival in 2008.
Javier is probably best known to Australian audiences for his roles in SEX AND LUCIA, BAD EDUCATION and Pedro Almodóvars TALK TO HER but has an extensive list of credits with a multitude of Television and films credits to his name. He also starred in the 2004 opening night film TORREMOLINOS ’73. With over 22 nominations for best actor awards around the world (he has taken home 13) which also includes 4 GOYA nominations(Spanish Academy Awards), Javier Cámara is at the very top of contemporary Spanish cinema. This year Javier will also be making an appearance at the festival with question and answer sessions in Sydney and Melbourne in the first days of the festival.
“Javier Cámara is one of the finest actors in contemporary Spanish cinema. While he is a wonderful dramatic actor, it is in comedy that he really shines, as his performance in our opening night film shows. Comedy is the most difficult genre, and Javier is so skilled at delivering a fantastic performance, without ever making the character ridiculous – you always empathise with him. We are thrilled to welcome him to Australia for the first time,” said Natalia Ortiz, Director of the Spanish Film Festival.
This years retrospective focused on the late great Luis Bunuel tickets are stampeding out the door as the Spanish diaspora throughout Australia snap up many of the seats on offer. Included in the retrospective is a recent documentary on the life of the great Spanish artiste called THE LAST SCRIPT: REMEMBERING LUIS BUÑUEL El ultimo guion: buñuel en la memoria (2008 Germany/Spain), directed by Gaizka Veresti and Javier Espada, and featuring his son Juan Luis Buñuel).
