World Film Festivals - April 2010

Screen Australia today announced investment of almost $8 million in two feature films, four TV drama series and five documentaries. Screen Australia’s support will trigger production worth over $42 million.

Screen Australia committed funds to A Few Best Men which teams acclaimed Australian director Stephan Elliott (The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert; Easy Virtue) with successful comedy writer Dean Craig (Death at a Funeral) to explore mayhem at an Australian wedding. An English groom asks his best friends to be his groomsmen, but the motley trio, combined with his fiancée’s bourgeois family, make for a wedding that is as funny as it is disastrous. Todd Fellman (Daybreakers), Gary Hamilton (Wolf Creek), Share Stallings (Death at a Funeral) and Laurence Malkin (Death at a Funeral) will produce the film.

Titans stand tall at Box Office

April 13th 2010 05:51
Despite estimates from the studios claiming DATE NIGHT as the top film at the Box Office, CLASH OF THE TITANS prevailed when actual grosses were tallied on Monday. Clash came in at $26.6 million, slightly less than its $26.9 million Sunday estimate, but Date Night had the biggest overestimation: its actual gross was $25.2 million versus the $27.1 million that its studio, 20th Century Fox, reported Sunday morning. HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON was also overestimated, landing with $24.9 million compared to its $25.4 million estimate.

But while Clash of the Titans is now well over the US$100 million mark, Clash's $110.2 million ten-day haul trails last years sandle blockbuster 300's $129.2 million. And while Clash has added 3D to its repertoire it seems that this post production addition riding on the back of the success of AVATAR has actually hindered the success of the film with patrons complaining about the quality and a larger than usual number complaining and leaving before the end of the film with eye soreness and headaches.

HANDSOME HARRY- trailer

April 6th 2010 03:27
HANDSOME HARRY is the latest film by Bette Gordon, whose 1983 feature, “Variety,” remains a signal work of the early American “indie” movement.

Heading an impressive ensemble cast, Jamey Sheridan (“The Ice Storm,” “Syriana”) portrays the title role-- a divorced man, alienated from his grown son, whose life is defined by a number of casual relationships but no intimate ones. A loner by choice, Harry is forced out of self-imposed exile when he is summoned to the deathbed of Tom Kelly (Steve Buscemi), an old Navy pal with one last wish: he wants Harry to seek out another old friend, Dave Kagan (Campbell Scott), and ask his forgiveness for some horrible wrong that Tom, Harry, and their other close friends committed when they were all still in the military. These men were once like Harry’s family, and Kagan was much more than that, but Harry has avoided them most of his adult life. Traveling thousands of miles—and across three decades of suppressed memories and emotions—Harry must now face each of his old buddies, and must ultimately find the courage to face Dave Kagan. Until he does, he will never be able to face himself.
