World Film Festivals - May 2010

Sydney Film Festival is delighted to announce additional guests attending the Festival who will be walking the red carpet and also participating in the free talks program. Audiences are invited to participate in lively discussions with the filmmakers following their screenings, exchanging ideas and thoughts on the process of making films. In-depth discussions will cover topics from genre filmmaking to working with some of the world’s best directors, actors, producers and cinematographers.

In celebration of Sir Sean Connery's 80th year, and his dedicated support of Edinburgh International Film Festival as Patron since 1992, he will be attending a Special Gala of one of his best-loved films in the Film Festival's spectacular new venue, the Edinburgh Festival Theatre. EIFF also announced today that the Special Gala will be sponsored by the Festival's newest supporter, Bank of Scotland.


The Bank of Scotland Gala will be John Huston's well loved classic swashbuckler THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING on Sunday 20 June, and will give the audience at Edinburgh's Festival Theatre the opportunity to show their appreciation for Sir Sean Connery's stellar career, his support of the EIFF and his upcoming birthday celebration in August

Transmission Films is proud to announce that the New Zealand film BOY has reached an incredible milestone to become the number one New Zealand film of all time. As of yesterday the film passed The World's Fastest Indian to reach the new box office record of over $7,050,000.

Since opening in New Zealand on March 25th, BOY has consistently held its own in the box office weekly charts, sitting in the number one position for an incredible 5 weeks, and in record time has taken just 8 weeks to become number one of all time. In comparison, The World's Fastest Indian took 46 weeks to reach the same level. Still number two at the New Zealand box office this week behind ROBIN HOOD and ahead of IRON MAN 2, BOY seems destined for an incredibly long cinema run.

EditFest Returns to New York.

June 11th & 12th, EditFest returns for its second year to New York with a star-studded lineup of award-winning editors during two tightly programmed days of education, information, and networking. Presented by American Cinema Editors (ACE) and Manhattan Edit Workshop, EditFest NY is the east coast presentation of ACE's highly regarded EditFest series, an event that puts leading editors in presentation and conversation with their peers, aspiring editors and film-enthusiasts.

Calling all filmmakers - Pitch your way to production for best new screen projects

SPAA Fringe, Australia's leading event for aspiring filmmakers, will catapult six of the best, new screen projects into the limelight through their pitching initiative, the SDA Pitching Competition. Screen Development Australia (SDA), the national network of screen resource organisations and SPAA Fringe have launched a nationwide search to uncover the best projects in the country, from a series of state-based pitching workshops and competitions.

The Australian/French co-production THE TREE received a rapturous standing ovation at its World Premiere last night, as the closing night film of the 63rd Cannes Film Festival.

Described by Variety as a "top-flight technical achievement for Aussie filmmaking" and "several grades above the norm for a Cannes closing-night selection," THE TREE stars Charlotte Gainsbourg (who earlier in the day had presented the festivals top award, the Palme d'Or), Marton Csokas and Aden Young and is directed by French filmmaker Julie Bertuccelli, whose debut feature, Since Otar Left, won the Grand Prize, International Critics' Week, at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival

Cannes: Academy-Award winner and producer of Chariots of Fire, The Mission and The Killing Fields will head the International Jury of the fourth annual Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA), to be held on Australia's Gold Coast on December 2, 2010.

Lord David Puttnam follows previous International Jury Presidents Huang Jianxin (2009, People's Republic of China), Bruce Beresford (2008, Australia) and Shabana Azmi (2007, India) to lead the group of distinguished film practitioners who decide on the winners of Asia-Pacific's highest accolade in film

Dungong Film Festival 2010

The world’s biggest showcase of Australian film will be exhibited at the 2010 Dungog Film Festival, running over a four day weekend from 27 to 30 May. Now in its fourth year, the Festival, which has attracted over 11 000 people since its inception, will feature a dynamic new program that celebrates film in a non-competitive environment.

Speed Auditioning will be an exciting addition to the Festival in 2010. Open to promising actors, this new initiative will provide a challenge for undiscovered acting talent. Entrants will perform a monologue in front of an expert‐judging panel, with the winner receiving $5000 and acting representation

Screen Australia is partnering with Emerging Pictures in New York to present the USA–Australian Film Showcase, a quarterly season of new Australian films not previously released in the US.

The Showcase will deliver a boutique event that celebrates Australian film culture and strengthens Australia’s screen presence in the US. Emerging Pictures will use its digital cinema network to release three films per quarter over a year, commencing June 2010. Participating films will be screened across 21 American states and in up to 60 cities, with a minimum of 12 venues including some of the country’s leading arthouse cinemas. The first three Australian films in the Showcase are Accidents Happen, The Waiting City and Charlie and Boots.

Alfred Hitchcock’s favorite among his dozens of films, “Shadow of a Doubt” will be screened as the next feature in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ “Oscar Noir: 1940s Writing Nominees from Hollywood’s Dark Side” on Monday, May 17, at 7:30 p.m. at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater. The film will be introduced by screenwriter Dick Clement (“The Bank Job,” “Across the Universe”).

Based on the Oscar-nominated story by Gordon McDonell, “Shadow of a Doubt” is the tale of a young girl who discovers her namesake “Uncle Charlie” may not be the man he claims to be.

The Edinburgh International Film Festival and The Walt Disney Company recently announced that Disney / Pixar's TOY STORY 3 will have a Special 3D Gala screening at this year's Festival on Saturday 19 June. The audience in Edinburgh will be the first in the UK to see TOY STORY 3 in 3D after its opening in the United States the previous day.

Attending the red carpet at Cineworld Edinburgh to greet audiences will be the film's exuberant rough-and-tumble cowgirl Jessie and the toys' dependable leader, everyone's favourite cowboy sheriff, Woody.

A record 61 entries from 36 countries, along with 497 entries from students representing 122 U.S. colleges and universities, are in competition for the 2010 Student Academy Awards. This year’s pool of submissions includes a first-ever entry from Nigeria. The competition – now in its 37th year – will culminate in the awards presentation, which will include screenings of the winning films, on Saturday, June 12, at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

The Academy established the Student Academy Awards in 1972 to support and encourage excellence in filmmaking at the collegiate level. Gold, Silver and Bronze Medal awards and corresponding cash prizes may be presented in each of four categories: Animation, Narrative, Documentary and Alternative. Additionally, one film is selected each year to receive the Honorary Foreign Film award.

In a first for Australian moviegoers, Sydney Film Festival patrons will be able to purchase and receive tickets on their iPhone.

No more waiting in queues or relying on computers or printers for your tickets – at the Festival in June you simply present your iPhone at the cinema door to scan a ticket barcode and go into a session. Films such as Banksy’s Exit Through the Gift Shop, John C. Reilly’s new comedy Cyrus or the new documentary showcasing Joan Rivers in her 75th year Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, will only be a flick of your finger away.

The ninth annual Tribeca Film Festival (TFF), co-founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff, and presented by Founding Sponsor American Express, today announced a total attendance of over 410,000 at screenings, panels and free community events, including the Drive-In and Street Fair. Theater attendance for the Festival screenings and events reached over 94,000. Screenings were often at capacity, with more than 95% attendance at 396 screenings and panels throughout the 12-day Festival.

The Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA) today announced members of the 2010 APSA Nominations Council, comprising international film industry experts from eight countries drawn from high profile academic institutions, film festivals and film organisations across Asia-Pacific. The 2010 Council chaired by Professor Hong-Joon Kim (Republic of Korea) includes two new members: producer/director Nan Achnas (Indonesia) and producer/author Peggy Chiao (Taiwan).

THE EYE OF THE STORM starring Geoffrey Rush, Judy Davis & Charlotte Rampling has begun filming in Australia. The highly anticipated feature film based on the classic novel by Patrick White, Australia's only ever recipient of the Nobel Prize for literature (in 1973), is now shooting in Melbourne.

Directed by internationally acclaimed Australian director Fred Schepisi, this will be the first feature film he has shot in Australia since the Oscar nominated, Evil Angels (1988), starring Meryl Streep.

SPAA Fringe will be held at the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney on the 22 and 23 October.

SPAA Fringe is an interactive two-day conference aimed at those who are serious about building a career in the Australian screen industry. The event is comprised of workshops, roundtables, one-on-one sessions, panel discussions, film screenings and social networking events.
