BOB CONNOLLY - Keynote Speaker
Palace Academy Twin Cinema Wednesday 16th July, 5:30pm
On Wednesday 16th July, Sydney Film School will host its highly anticipated 8th Student Film Festival, celebrating the filmmaking talents of its semester 1 students. These twice annual events are the jewel in the crown of the school's year, playing to full houses and showcasing the SFS credo of compassion, curiosity and courage through the art of film. The day starts at 10am with an inspiring program of short dramas, documentaries and thesis films.
The evening session will kick off at 5:30pm with an exuberant celebration in the foyer of the Academy Twin Cinema, with delicious complimentary drinks from [yellowtail] wines and bubbles, and Stella Artois and Staropramen beers, as well as a program of the very best of the schools films.
Each SFS Film Festival to date has invited a high profile industry figure to address the audience of students and guests. Aiming to inspire and inform Key Note Speakers have included eminent Directors Phillip Noyce, George Miller, Tom Zubrycki, Gillian Armstrong, former Prime Minister of Australia, Paul Keating and renowned actor Barry Otto.
This July, Sydney Film School is extremely proud to welcome Bob Connolly, one of Australia's pre-eminent Documentary filmmakers as their Special Guest. Connolly is an excellent choice to inspire the students and guests alike, having made with his partner Robin Anderson some of the most highly acclaimed documentaries in Australia's history; films that have explored the minutiae of local politics, Rats in the Ranks (1996) and captured the frontier between tribal traditions and western capitalism in the ground breaking trilogy First Contact (1983), Joe Leahy's Neighbours (1989) and Black Harvest (1992). Bob Connolly's work has been internationally lauded with 14 International Film Awards and nominations, including an Academy Award Nomination for First Contact.
Sydney Film School gives a full scholarship to an outstanding entry in the Robin Anderson Film Awards, a film competition for secondary school filmmakers which honours the life and work of Robin Anderson.
Wednesday 16th July is Awards Night, where students and graduates will be recognised amid their peers in a post screening award presentation, with Awards including Best Drama and Best Documentary, to name a few. Each category is judged by the teaching staff and outside industry professionals particular to each discipline.
Each Festival, Sydney Film School invites one student film from another international film school, as a significant way to strengthen ties between the school and the international community. SFS is extremely pleased to announce the screening of Endless Dead Ends Directed by Jacob Bitsch of the National Film School of Denmark. The film will be introduced by special guest Birgitte Engholm, Danish Cultural Attaché.
