AFCA Announces Annual Film Awards...

& Introduces Prizes for Film Writing.


In recognition of the high standard of film reviews and film writing, so often taken for granted, the Australian Film Critics Association (AFCA), has expanded their annual ‘Film Awards’ to incorporate the ‘Film Writing Awards’ – a new section, with an emphasis on Australian film, consisting of four categories with accompanying cash prizes - $200 for film reviews and $400 for extended film pieces.


AFCA received a robust 50 submissions for this inaugural segment, with entries being judged by Anna Dzenis (Film Lecturer at Latrobe University) and Keith Gallasch (Arts Editor, Real Time Magazine).

The winners were:

IVAN HUTCHINSON AWARD FOR WRITING ON AUSTRALIAN FILM
- WINNER: Therese Davis for her extended article: "Loving Samson & Delilah"
*Many thanks to Grace Hutchinson for allowing us to name this Award in memory of her husband.

AWARD FOR A REVIEW OF AN INDIVIDUAL AUSTRALIAN FILM
- WINNER: Alice Tynan for her review of DISGRACE.

AWARD FOR WRITING ON NON-AUSTRALIAN FILM
- WINNER: Martyn Pedler for his extended article: "Fake Politics for the Real America"

AWARD FOR A REVIEW OF AN INDIVIDUAL NON-AUSTRALIAN FILM
- WINNER: Stephen Rowley for his review of 2012


AFCA’s Annual ‘Film Awards’ for 2009 saw members vote with the following results:


BEST AUSTRALIAN FILM
- WINNER: BALIBO (Director: Robert Connelly)
COMMENDED: MARY AND MAX) (Director: Adam Elliott)
SAMSON & DELILAH (Director: Warwick Thornton)

BEST OVERSEAS FILM
- WINNER: LET THE RIGHT ONE IN (Director: Tomas Alfredson, Sweden)
COMMENDED: MOON (Director: Duncan Jones, UK)
THE WRESTLER (Darren Aronofsky, USA)
UP (Directors: Peter Docter & Bob Peterson, USA)


BEST DOCUMENTARY
- WINNER: OF TIME & THE CITY (Director: Terence Davies, UK)
COMMENDED: ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD
(Director: Werner Herzog, Germany)
CAPITALISM: A LOVE STORY (Director: Michael Moore, USA)

BEST UN-RELEASED FILM
- WINNER: UN LAC (Directed by Philippe Grandrieux, France)
COMMENDED: LOVE EXPOSURE (Director Shion Sono, Japan)

AFCA also enjoys an association with the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), which serves as its base for screenings and panel discussions.
