"... a beakful of yuks... 'Woodpecker' soars above the bulk of low-budget Amerindie farces, if not above the director's earlier 'The Hole Story', now a minor cult fave on DVD. A rare bird himself, Karpovsky remains one to watch."
— Variety
Rooftop Films returns to the halls of Chelsea Market for a free screening of Woodpecker. Fanatical birdwatchers have descended upon a small town in the Arkansas bayou in hopes of finding the celebrated Ivory Billed Woodpecker. Declared extinct in the 1940’s, the bird has apparently been spotted by numerous experts. Enter amateur birder and poet Johnny Neander, who has convinced his taciturn sidekick that he will be the one to find the elusive woodpecker. The ensuing chaos divides the small town between believers and non-believers, rabid environmentalists and opportunistic entrepreneurs. Much like the bird itself, Woodpecker explores the intersection of fact and fiction, manipulating our notions of documentary and narrative techniques within a tragic comedy about hope, perception, and some very, very strange birds.
Woodpecker is the second feature-length film from writer/director Alex Karpovsky. Alex’s debut feature, The Hole Story, screened at Rooftop in 2006, won numerous awards on the festival circuit and was described by Indiewire as “Amazing: smart, hilarious and surprisingly profound". Alex was named one of Filmmaker Magazine's "25 New Faces of Independent Film", and Woodpecker focuses on the strange and blossoming world of bird watching – America’s fastest growing recreational activity with some 50 million enthusiasts.
Filmed entirely on location in the bayous of Eastern Arkansas, Woodpecker is an existential tragicomedy that follows a desperate bird watcher searching for the celebrated (and elusive) Ivory-Billed Woodpecker, once thought to be extinct. Featuring the dark brilliance of Jon E. Hyrns (star of the celebrated documentary Johnny Berlin, released last year) and an original soundtrack with contributions from Colin Greenwood of Radiohead and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah brothers Lee and Tyler Sargent, Woodpecker is a uniquely intelligent and entertaining film. ters, and even more at festivals)
