Assassin's Creed II: Lineage

August 5th 2009 02:28
Ubisoft 's short film series takes the successful Assassin's Creed video game franchise into new platforms

Ubisoft is expanding its successful video game brands franchise into Film with the announcement at Comic-Con in San Diego of the October 2009 release of a short film series: Assassin's Creed II: Lineage.

Assassin's Creed II: Lineage will comprise three short movies, each 8-12 minutes in length, directed by Yves Simoneau, an awarded director and scriptwriter whose work includes Nuremberg, Marie-Antoinette and Napoleon.

The film's storyline act as the prequel to the eagerly anticipated Assassin's Creed II game being released in November where gamers incarnate Ezio, a privileged young noble in Renaissance Italy who's been betrayed by several rival ruling families. Lineage communicates the story of Ezio's father, Giovanni Auditore da Firenze and the events that
lead to Ezio's quest for vengeance, offering background and emotional insight into the Assassin's Creed II storyline and characters.

Both the game and the films are targeted at males and females 18 : both existing gaming fans and new audiences who will appreciate the visual CGI techniques and relish the action and adventure narrative.

Each film is a mix of live action with virtual backgrounds created by special-effects studio Hybride Technologies, one of the industry's most renowned VFX creator known for its work on Sin City and 300 and recently acquired by Ubisoft.

For Assassin's Creed II: Lineage, Hybride has developed specific in-house techniques that allow them to directly project in-game environment on the set of the shooting allowing the director and the actors on the green-screen set to have a real understanding of the
spatial environment in which the action takes place. They worked collaboratively with the internal digital content development team at Ubisoft Digital Art to not only develop the films but also strongly influence the game visuals and animation as well. Many of the film's experts worked with the development team to bring a new level of quality to the game. Film and game writers worked together; designers and art directors shared insights on weaponry to ensure game animation mirrored the working versions; and actors on the film also provided voice-overs and motion-capture work for their characters in the game.

This announcement positions Ubisoft as a game developer, publisher and a company that is producing entertainment content on multiple platforms and mediums.

"We are committed to making these short movies as visually stunning as our games by using state of the art Hollywood production tools, processes and technology. It has been a very positive experience and we have found that making the films in-house has allowed for sharing valuable experience resources and ensuring that the property's creators stay involved," says Yannis Mallat, CEO, Ubisoft Montreal.

Ubisoft is yet to finalise distribution plans for Assassin's Creed II:Lineage but expects to release each of the short films separately before the game's launch on 19th November 2009.
