World Film Festivals - by SimonC

Australian Film Festival set to open!

February 3rd 2010 04:48

The Australian Film Festival is a new concept for film festivals in Australia, combining aspects of screening, film and audience development, educational programs and marquee events in a festival atmosphere.

Evolving from the 2009 Australian Film Week, the Australian Film Festival is the country's most comprehensive presentation of Australian film content.

With screenings at Randwick, Coogee and Clovelly Beach, and a stone's throw from Fox Studios and the nation's leading film education facilities, the Australian Film Festival is set in the heart of Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, and at the hub of Australian filmmaking and film audience.

With the iconic Randwick Ritz Cinema as its' screening HQ, the Festival opens on February 24 with a very special Popcorn Taxi Q&A event featuring some of Australia's best filmmakers. Programmed by Peter Castaldi, one of Australia's most respected film authorities, over the following 11 inspiring days the AFF will combine a series of indoor/outdoor screenings and marquee events.

Featuring traditional and new media productions, classic films, unreleased features and digital genres, the Festival is underpinned by the unique AFF Next Wave Film Centre, educating Australia's future filmmakers.

Then, on the 7th March, AFF closes the streets surrounding the Ritz Cinema for an exciting Food & Film Festival, the inducting of this year's Australian Film Walk of Fame recipient and the final event, the Australian Short Film Festival.

"The Australian Film Festival is a new concept for film festivals, which will be taking a modern and global view of what film is," festival director Barry Watterson says.

"The purpose of the festival is not simply the screening of Australian film. We're also focused on the long term development of Australian film content in a rapidly changing global environment and the building of audiences for Australian film."
