BAFTA winners 2010

February 26th 2010 23:22

Well if you havent heard by now, Kathryn Bigelow's THE HURT LOCKER overcame her ex-husband James Cameron's AVATAR juggernaut to take out this years BAFTA for Best Picture and Best Director becoming amazingly the first woman to take out the Best Director prize after more than 60 years and confirming her favouritism for the Oscars this Sunday in Los Angeles.

THE HURT LOCKER follows the day to day events surrounding a bomb disposal unit in Iraq and the conflict between a gung-ho cowboy played by Jeremy Renner and a by teh books military specialist who runs the support team.

Applauded for its gritty realism, this film is one of the few in recent times to try to offered a more centered point of view of what is happening over in the Middle Eastern desert. Last years STOP LOSS looked at the domestic side of the war back in the USA and the conflict of being forced to return to war against your will after completetion of your 'Tour of Duty'. THE HURT LOCKER neither applauds nor condemns the involvment in the war, but allows the audience to make up their own minds a major reason for its succes both at the Box Office and during the International Awards season.

The film picked up 6 awards in total with Original Screenplay by Mark Boal, Cinematography, Editing and Sound joing the two in the BAFTA sweep, but was unable to take home any acting awards with Jeremey Renner missing out to Colin Firth(A SINGLE MAN) who beat the sentimental favourite Jeff Bridges(CRAZY HEART).

Carey Mulligan took home the leading actress award for her performance in AN EDUCATION, holding off some industry heavywieghts in Meryl Streep and Audrey Tatou as well as some new talents in Saoirse Ronan and Gabourey Sidibe.

For best supporting roles INGLORIOUS BASTERDS took home the Best Supporting Actor BAFTA thanks to a brilliant performance by Christoph Waltz and Mo'nique took Best Supporting Actress for PRECIOUS.

While some media outlets have tried to keep the suspense going in the leadup to the Academy Awards, with a Golden Globe and BAFTA among the multitude of awards already snapped up, it seems the only question is how many OSCARS Kathryn and her team will pick up on Sunday night.
