BIFF 07 wrapped up on Saturday August 12 with a host of awards presented to the multitude of cinematic offerings on display over the 2 weeks of the festival and a special tribute to Academy Award winning producer George Milller through free screenings of his most famous films.
With a series of outdoor screenings in the suburbs ‘BIFF in the Burbs’ also brought the cinema to the larger community with such classics as ‘Happy Feet’ and ‘Babe’ showing to packed audiences throughout the festival.
The fast film competition gave aspiring filmmakers 50 days to write shoot and edit a film on any subject no more than 4 minutes in length and those attending the ‘BIFF in the Burbs’ were given the opportunity to vote on the final films accepted for screening over the program running from August 2 – 12 with the eventual winner
Action thriller FAY GRIM by cult American filmmaker Hal Hartley widely considered to be the pioneer of the independent film movement opened the festival before 10 days of local and international films screened to enthusiastic audiences throughout South-East Queensland region.
With THE HOME SONG STORIES continuing its extraordinary lead up to its national theatrical release on August 23, taking out the prestigious FIPRESCI international jury award there was a lot to be pleased with for our local filmmakers
Twelve local films screened at this years festival it is gratifying to find the independent film movement in Australia is in good shape. Rolf de Heer’s latest offering DR PLONK was one of the festival highlights screening in both the Cinesparks and family section of the main programme. In addition to the features, there were more than 20 shorts including 6 indigenous shorts.
Another independent blockbuster ‘A Might Heart’ was a powerful climax to the immensely successful festival following the awards ceremony the previous evening at the Tivoli Theatre in Fortitude Valley. The CHAUVEL award for 2007 went to David Stratton for his ongoing support and contribution to cinema not only in Australia but throughout the world.
