Bodyguards and Assassins takes Asian Box Office

With all the hype surrounding Avatar becoming the fifth film to top the Billion dollar mark worldwide, it should be noted that with the cost of tickets continually rising at the cinema complexes, this will soon become not the exception, but the norm.
And while we continue to hail the mainstream films and their filmmakers with directors such as James Cameron continuing to talk up how expensive his films are and how somehow the cost of making the film equates into a fantastic film, lesser known directors continue to make films with as much appeal to the general public as the cash-burners.
Cinema Popular’s first action thriller Bodyguards And Assassins has topped the Chinese box office over the holiday period racking up a $30m (RMB208m) to December 29.
The film, which opened on December 18 in China and on Christmas Eve across Asia, has accumulated more than $35m (RMB238m) including Hong Kong, Sinapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Taiwan. It is hoped the film will reach $44m (RMB300m) on mainland China before the end of its run.
Cinema Popular's $23m historical epic Bodyguards And Assassins(Shi yue wei cheng (2009)) directed by Teddy Chen features a host of Hong Kong and Chinese stars including Donnie Yen, Leon Lai, Nicholas Tse and Chinese actor Wang Xueqi (Forever Enthralled).
The box office office gross equals that of Warlords, the last production made by Bodyguards And Assassins producer Peter Ho-sun Chan.
Chan said: “This is both an indication of our better grasp of the China market and its ever-expanding population of filmgoers.”
The long-gestating project, which Chen developed over ten years, revolves around an assassination attempt on the founder of modern China, Sun Yat-sen.
Established in early 2009, Cinema Popular is a production joint venture between Chan, Huang Jianxin and Beijing-based Bona International. Bodyguards And Assassins is Cinema Popular’s first film.
The film will open in Thailand through United Home Entertainment and UIP on January 7, followed by Korea by CJ Entertainment on January 21, and the UK with E1 Entertainment this coming spring.
With the film presently screening on one screen at the HOYTS Mandarin Cinema in Sydneys northern suburb of Chatswood alongside films such as 'Avatar', and 'New Moon' and the hugely successful phenomena "Paranormal Activity'.
Hopefully the film will recieve a wider release in the west and we can look forward to BODYGUARDS AND ASSASSINS hitting more local screens sometime over the coming year.
