TUESDAY 18 MARCH, the Screen Producers Association of Australia is proud to officially launch the fourth annual DigiSPAA. The success of last year's digital filmmaking competition saw entries increase by more than10% on 2006 and 45% from 2005. 2007 also marked the launch of the inaugural SPAARTAN Award which was awarded to Producer, John L Simpson for Men's Group (Simpson also distributed The Jammed). Men's Group has since been accepted into Melbourne International Film Festival (2008).
"DigiSPAA continues to inspire and attract top filmmakers from Australia and New Zealand. The SPAARTAN Award is the richest prize of its kind in Australasia, thanks to The Movie Network." said Executive Director,Geoff Brown.
This year Melburnians are thrilled to play host to the official launch on Tuesday 18 March, which will see film-lovers, filmmakers and industry movers-and-shakers celebrate in style over cocktails, conversation and a tribute to past and future winners. DigiSPAA is recognised as the leading showcase for low-budget filmmaking in Australia and New Zealand. It's a celebration of making a feature film at all costs, or no costs while remembering it's all about the story! Eligible films are feature length, with a running time of at
least 70mins, digitally produced and completed to advanced post-production stage no earlier than 31 August 2007, and independentlyfunded.
The winner, who will be announced at the SPAA Conference in November, will receive a $15,000 cash prize and $20,000 worth of post production sponsored by MOVIE NETWORK CHANNELS, plus a guaranteed screening on the MOVIE EXTRA channel. On top of this, the winner also receives a one year subscription to the Movie Network and return airfare and free registration to the prestigious CineMart International Film Festival Rotterdam. All finalists will be made available to prominent international and local delegates at the SPAAConference, so all applicants will have ample exposure to the top dogs of the industry.
Digi SPAA finalists will be screened at this year's SPAA Fringe conference on 24 and 25 October at the Chauvel Cinema and judged by an expert industry panel based on the quality of the films and the filmmakers' ability to demonstrate a clear marketing plan across a range
of digital platforms. While delegates and speakers of SPAA Fringe will be able to attend the screenings, tickets will also be available to the public.
2007 judges were Melanie Coombs, producer of the Oscar winning Harvie Krumpet, Antony I. Ginnane, President of IFM World Releasing Inc., Geoff Brown, Executive Director SPAA; Daniel Scharf, Producer of Geoffrey Wright's AFI Award-winning Romper Stomper; and Colleen Meldrum, Program Director, Movie Network Channels.
Ginnane who has been on both the 2006 and 2007 judging panels continues to be impressed with the calibre of the entrants and finalists notes:
"Winner John L Simpson for Men's Group and runner up Kristian Moliere for Boxing Day, directed by Kriv Stenders have both experienced recent success validating the cutting edge content of the entries and the worldwide value and perception of the finalists and the DigiSPAA process. Boxing Day was released theatrically in November 2007 to critical acclaim including four star reviews in the Herald Sun and The Age. It received two nominations for 2007 Inside Film Awards and hasbeen accepted into more than 10 international film festivals. Men'sGroup is about to be released theatrically and has been accepted into Melbourne International Film Festival. "
