'Capturing Film History in-the-making'

July 17th 2009 00:00
Getty Images Gallery and Pinewood present a new photography exhibition capturing iconic, behind-the-scenes images of some of the world's greatest stars filming at Pinewood, Shepperton and Teddington Studios over the past 50 years, including Stanley Kubrick and Sean Connery, opened at Getty Images Gallery, London on Friday 4 July 2008.

Images from Pinewood and Getty Images have been selected to illustrate the extraordinary heritage of these landmark British film and TV studios which date back to the early 20th Century, having merged in more recent years to become the Pinewood Group. Both Pinewood and Shepperton Studios have become synonymous with British and international world-class filmmaking, home to revered filmmakers throughout the years and some of the most successful features ever produced.

"This exhibition is a tribute to our photographers who have created a fascinating visual history of British film-making" says Getty Images Gallery Director Louise Garczewska. "Their skill in working unobtrusively has resulted in an intriguing glimpse into the making of some of our best loved films."

Imagery highlighted in the exhibition includes American film maker Stanley Kubrick on set of his film Dr Strangelove with two of the actors, Tracy Reed and George C Scott on either side; David Lean watching Alec Guiness be transformed for his role of Fagin in Oliver Twist; Peter Sellers in costume as Inspector Clouseau on the set of a Pink Panther feature and Charlie Chaplin directing his daughter Geraldine and Marlon Brando in The Countess of Hong Kong.

The Rolling Stones, The Who, Joanna Lumley, Marianne Faithful, Gregory Peck, Sophia Loren, Tim Burton, Gregory Peck, Keira Knightley and Joan Collins are amongst other artists captured off-set in the exhibition's pictures. England's World Cup winning football team are also photographed visiting Pinewood Studios in 1966, chatting with Sean Connery and Yul Brynner.

Comments Pinewood's Group Sales and Marketing Director Nick Smith "This exhibition creates a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the UK's contribution to the film and TV industry as well as our Studios' continued ability to attract the world's top industry talent."
Following its July opening at the Getty Images Gallery in London, the exhibition will then tour to New York in September and Los Angeles in November.

Exhibition runs: Friday 4th July - Saturday 2 August 2008

Gallery opening: Mon - Fri: 10.00-18.30, Sat: 12.00-18.00
