Censorship Iran Style.

If you thought censorship in the western world can be a little prudish at times, try making a living as an actor or actress in Iran.
State authorities have banned 25 year old actress Golshifteh Farahani from leaving the country after it was found out that she starred in the new Ridley Scott film ‘Body of Lies’ opposite Hollywood favourites Russell Crowe and Leonardo Di Caprio according to the official new agency IRNA. The film tells the story of a CIA agent (DiCaprio) sent to Jordan to track down an Al-Qaeda leader
Under Iranian law, no national may appear in a foreign film without prior consent from the Culture Ministry
Farahani found out about her ban when she turned up at the airport to to travel to Hollywood to discuss a new offer. She is the first Iranian star tio appear in a Hollywood film and it could be her last one for quite some time if reports are accurate. ‘body of Lies’ is due for release in the States in October, but it is doubtful any of Farahani’s countrymen will be watching her performance any time in the foreseeable future.
One of Irans most popular actresses, Farahani is no stranger to controversy having previously starred in the divisive 2007 feature ‘Santouri’ which follows the lives of a young Iranina couple who snub local convention. A long haired musician played by Bahram Radan and his young wife struggle with the husband’s heroin addiction. The film’s release was held back by four months while censors deliberated whether or not the film was fit for release. Recent reports suggest the film has to this date still not ben released locally in Iran.
In contrast, her 2006 film ‘M for Mother’ directed by the late Rasoul Mollagholipoor was such a huge domestic hit that it was chosen to represent Iran at the Academy Awards® for Best Foreign Film.
