Monday 23 March
DAY OF WRATH (DENMARK/1943/B&W/98mins/NFVL S/M)
Dir: Carl Theodor Dreyer
Set in the early 17th century; the trial and burning of an old woman accused of witchcraft catalyses, through her dying curse, a complex pattern of guilt and retribution interwoven with desire and rebellion in a family consisting of a minister, his young wife Anne, his mother and son.
Monday 30 March
ORDET (DENMARK/1955/B&W/125mins/16m m/NFVLS/PG)
Dir: Carl Theodor Dreyer
This is a symbolic narrative about the clash of different kinds of religious faith in two families - a life affirming 'here and now' creed, and a darker creed of self-denial in preparation for the after life.
Monday 6 April
THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS (USA/1942/B&W/88mins/NFVLS/18 )
Dir: Orson Welles
Welles' adaptation of Tarkington's novel spans four decades in the life of the Amberson dynasty from 1873-1912. Underlying the family's decline is the struggle in Indianapolis between the landed aristocracy and the new industrial bourgeoisie.
Monday 13 April
IF... (UK/1968/Colour/112mins/16mm/ NFVLS/M)
Dir: Lindsay Anderson
The film captures the particular ethos of a public school and the general flavour of any highly structured community, combining an allegorical thrust with a clear-eyed exploration of an essentially British institution.
Monday 20 April
THE TRIAL (USA/1962/B&W/118mins/16mm/NF VLS/18 )
Dir: Orson Welles
Welles' apocalyptic nightmare is a transmutation of Kafka that defies most of the narrative conventions, remaining on an abstract level, blackly comic and in the labyrinth denial of cause and affect. Unlike Kafka's Joseph K, while trapped in a mechanism of guilt and responsibility Welles' K is anything but an innocent victim of totalitarianism.
Monday 27 April
DAY OF THE LOCUST (USA/1975/144mins/Colour/16mm /NFVLS/MA15 )
Dir: John Schlesinger
A pessimistic, sordid tale of broken dreams and human weaknesses. The Locust focusses on the desperate lives of two failed entertainers who strive in vain, amongst other assorted losers on the fringe of Tinseltown, to gain entry into the glamorous world of the studios.
Monday 4 May
FIXED BAYONETS (USA/1951/92mins/B&W/16mm/NFV LS/MA15 )
Dir: Samuel Fuller
Korea, 1950. A platoon of the toughest, most experienced soldiers is left behind to conduct a rearguard action for the retreating Americans - sacrifice of the few to save the many.
Monday 11 May
IN A YEAR OF 13 MOONS (1978/Colour/123mins/16mm/NFV LS/MA15 )
Dir: Rainer Werner Fassbinder
Along with the episode in 'Germany in Autumn' this is one of Fassbinder's most personal works, a working through of guilt following the suicide of his lover Armin Mein in 1978, a moon year and a year of thirteen new moons. This is an astrological conjunction likely to produce personal catastrophe. Set in Frankfurt, a city of expressionistic desolation, the film recounts the last days of a transsexual, Elvira.
Monday 18 May
THE PORNOGRAPHERS (JAPAN/1966/B&W/128mins/16mm/ NFVLS/18 )
Dir: Shohei Immamura
A pornographic filmmaker is disgusted, yet obsessed with the lechery of his customers. Unable to escape from his marginal existence through an affair with his landlady he retires to a houseboat to construct the perfect facsimile of a woman.
Monday 25 May
TALES OF UGETSU (JAPAN/1953/B&W/89mins/16mm/N FVLS/R18 )
Dir: Kenji Mizoguchi
Mizoguchi's most acclaimed film is set during the civil wars of the sixteenth century. A potter, Genjuro, and his brother dream of better times. The first half of the film portrays the chaos and misery war brings to the villagers. Represented within the two families are different responses to war: opportunistic ambition and greed on the part of the men as opposed to endurance, devotion and optimism on the part of the women.
