BEFORE THE RAINS (M) - NOW SHOWING!!!
A sweeping romance set in Colonial India, acclaimed director Santosh Sivan's (THE TERRORIST, ASOKA) English-language debut traces an idealistic young man (Rahul Bose) who finds himself torn between his ambitions for the future and his loyalty to the past when people in his village learn of an affair between his British boss (Linus Roache) and a village woman (Nandita Das). In the lush tradition of Merchant-Ivory, this is a seductive moral maze.
Fatal culture clash, imperialist entitlement, forbidden passion between master and servant: the ingredients of the Indian director Santosh Sivan's period piece Before the Rains may be awfully familiar, but the film lends them the force of tragedy."
Stephen Holden, THE NEW YORK TIMES
BLACK ICE (MA15 ) - Exclusive season commences Thu 15 Jan!
See it if you dare!! Finnish director Petri Kotwica's sexy new thriller is a gripping portrayal of jealousy and its ravages. Afraid of losing her husband to another woman, Saara makes friends with her rival using a false identity. A dangerous psychological game of life and death ensues...
"A visually arresting and psychologically trippy thriller about dangerous deceptions within a romantic triangle... An exciting ride that displays ferocious talent on both sides of the camera as a taut tale of near-claustrophobic intimacy gets the Cinemascope treatment."
Kirk Honeycutt, THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
THE NEW YORK METROPOLITAN OPERA: THAIS
The Chauvel presents the latest direct transmission from the New York Metropolitan Opera stage, THAIS, the Met's first new production of Jules Massenet's richly melodic opera in thirty years, starring Renee Fleming.
The production has opened to strong reviews: The New York Times raved: "Ms. Fleming delivers a vocally sumptuous and unabashedly show-stealing Thais. This is a diva spectacle, and Fleming plays it to the hilt. Hampson is in top form and their work is compelling together." The Associated Press said: "Fleming was in glorious voice, and also got to show off her spectacular figure in a series of costumes designed by Christian Lacroix."
Set in Hellenistic Egypt, THAIS is the story of an ascetic monk, Athanael (Hampson), who convinces the beautiful courtesan Thais (Fleming) to dedicate her life to God, only to find himself tormented by his attraction to her. Jesus Lopez-Cobos conducts the sensuous and melodic score, with tenor Michael Schade as Thais's lover, Nicias. All three singers are performing their roles for the first time at the Met. The production, which comes from the Lyric Opera of Chicago, is by John Cox.
