She made her name in Tamil Films, but can Asin Thottumkal conquer the Hindi movie scene? It seems the all conquering Tamil Actress is planning on conquering Bollywood after relocating from Chenai to a new flat in Mumbai.
With one Hindi film co-starring Aamir Khan due for release in October (albeit a remake of her 2005 Tamil hit Ghalini{Victory} and having signed on to star in two more films LONDON DREAMING with Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan and the other as yet untitled, the hype surrounding her move continues to grow.
After appearing on the cover of Vogue India’s July issue and being touted as one of the new heroines of Bollywood, Mumbai Tabloid reported Asin had not signed to appear in any further Tamil Pictures after her current release DASAVATHARAM (Ten Aviators) yet the actress herself has denied that the move is permanent.
“I’ve had an apartment in Mumbai for over a year. It was only last December that I moved there because my present commitments –both films and endorsements – require me to be in Mumbai”
Meanwhile the media continues to predict that this gifted actress from Southern India will join the ranks of others who have successfully made the transition including Vyjanthimala, Hema Malini, Rekha and Sridevi who have all had considerable success in the North.
Asin made her acting debut in 2001, she was at first considered a jinx as every film she became associated with had logistical or monetary problems resulting in delays and cancellations before her big breakthrough came in 2004 with the M Kumaran film SON OF MAHALAKSHMI before her performance in 2005’s GHALINI won her the Filmfare Best Actress Award.
But will she be successful considering that Hindi actresses are willing to show a lot more flesh in their films as in contrast with the more conservative films of the Tamils.
Singapore Producer JK Saravana feels she has a long way to go.“If you look at the other actresses like Deepika Padukone or Mallika Sherawat, she has a lot of competition…..It is really tough to say at this point how well she might do”
But music producer Shivaranini Morthy thinks she has what it takes to make it.“She has the talent. She can act well, I don’s see why she can’t be a success.”
It looks like this newcomer to the bright lights of Bollywood has a lot of work ahead of her if she wants to be as successful as the previous vanguard from the south.
