EIGHTH TRIBECA SET TO OPEN APRIL 22

April 14th 2009 14:18
Jane Rosenthal co-founder of the TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL (along with Robert De Niro and Craig Hatkoff) is having trouble sleeping. Like a young child approaching Christmas, Ms Rosenthal’s insomnia is more akin to the anticipation surrounding what has very quickly become one of the major events on the American Film Festival circuit.

The 2009 festival has accepted entries from 33 different countries with over 48 World Premieres set for screening within the two week event. And the nervous anticipation is not only reserved for the organisers. With 81 directors screening their work at this year’s festival, just under 50 percent will be making their feature film debuts. This kind of exposure is an enormous boost for these promising new cinematic creators with some of the world’s leading producers and distributors keeping a keen eye on what is on show. Careers can be made in less than 2 hours of screentime. Also included in the festival will be the DISCOVERY section screening 14 ‘new and emerging voices in film.’

Yet as with other festivals, there continues to be an imbalance between the number of female and male directors with films screening at this years festival. The discrepancy between male and female filmmakers continues to define the industry with only 23 females accepted into the feature films section. While it is not an argument of equality for all and films should not be included just to try to balance out the equation, it seems a little curious that out of 2254 submissions, such a small number of female filmmakers progressed to the final stage, outlining the void that still exists within the industry between the sexes.

"Each year we look forward to bringing our films to the most engaged movie-going audience and providing filmmakers a global stage," said Jane Rosenthal, co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival. "Film festivals play a critical role in the life of a film. Tribeca is here to support these films and filmmakers along their journey. We are very proud of the slate this year and hope everyone will come and enjoy the festival."

The 2009 Tribeca Film Festival line-up for its two discussion programs - the Tribeca Talks Series and "Behind the Screens: Films and Conversations about Truth, Clarity and Responsibility," includes "Tribeca Talks Panels," "Tribeca Talks: After the Movie," "Tribeca Talks Special Events," "Tribeca Talks: Industry" and "Tribeca Talks: Pen to Paper

"The Tribeca Talks panel series has always been one of the Festival's most compelling programs, examining issues and trends in society and the entertainment industry with some of the biggest names in film, art and media," said Nancy Schafer, Executive Director of the Tribeca Film Festival.

"Tribeca Talks Special Events" will present the world premiere of Poliwood, a film that explores the collision and collusion between politics and Hollywood and Passing Strange, Spike Lee's filmed record of the 2008 Tony Award®-winning Broadway rock musical.

"Behind the Screens" will showcase select films and further explore their themes with additional conversations with film participants.

Other highlights of the Tribeca Talks Series include:

The Big Time to the Big Screen: 30 Years of Sports Filmmaking, The inherent link between sports and filmmaking

The Future of Independents, about how an independent film gets made in today's rapidly shrinking global economy.

The Festival films ten sections are as follows
World Narrative Competition, World Documentary Competition, Discovery, Encounters, Midnight, Spotlight, Showcase, Restored/Rediscovered, Galas and Special Events. Starting tomorrow with Narrative and Documentary a description direct from TRIBECA of films screening in each different category will be published.
