EXCLUSIVE’S AT THE SHOVEL
May 15th 2009 06:16
Chauvel Cinema – Paddington Sydney
RIP! A REMIX MANIFESTO (M)
Commences Thursday May 21
Web activist and filmmaker Brett Gaylor explores issues of copyright in the information age, mashing up the media landscape of the 20th century and shattering the wall between users and producers. The film's central protagonist is Girl Talk, a mash-up musician topping the charts with his sample-based songs. But is Girl Talk a paragon of people power or the Pied Piper of piracy?
THE CHIFLEYS OF BUSBY STREET (G)
Special matinee sessions from Monday May 25. All tix just $9.00
Ben Chifley (1885-1951) was a railway engine-driver who became one of Australia's best-loved Prime Ministers, and had a profound effect on the path of Australian history following WWII. This film is an exercise in "People's History": an attempt to find and share the communal memory of Ben and his wife, Elizabeth, that lives on in their hometown of Bathurst. In this film, the stories and memories of over 50 friends, neighbours and colleagues contribute to an emotional and eloquent portrait of a remarkable community and a national leader.
THE CHOIR (M)
Commences Thursday June 4
In 1994 South Africa transformed from dictatorship to democracy - a massive crime wave rocked the country. THE CHOIR explores the consequences of this social upheaval through the remarkable experiences of the prison choristers battling to survive in South Africa's biggest prison.
"Paradoxical images of hardened criminals with voices like angels are uplifting from the outset, but Zimbabwe-born helmer, Michael Davie transcends feel-good shortcuts to unblinkingly explore convicts' lives...[A] soulful but rigorously tough documentary." Russell Edwards, Variety
