Ex-Pats Overseas.

Ryan Kwanten takes a bite out of cable.
It seems like Aussie Soaps are the new breeding ground for success in the US.
With actors the likes of Guy Pearce, Russell Crowe continuously making great films and Alan Dale and Jesse Spencer continuing to make a name for themselves in shows such as Ugly Betty and House and the above mentioned Rachael Taylor taking on the big screen, it is no wonder ex Home and Away
favourite Ryan Kwanten (Vinnie Patterson for those who follow the soap) has made his own mark on the bright lights of Los Angeles.
Twelve years after being offered the role on the long running soap opera, Ryan continues to thrive in an industry where anywhere up to 85% of the 100,000 struggling and aspiring actors registered with the Screen Actors Guild are usually out of work. After working on the surprisingly short lived SUMMERLAND and film roles in ‘Flicka’ and Dead Silence’Kwanten has scored a major role in the new prime time series ‘True Blood’ which is scheduled for screening around August in the United States.
Based on the book series ‘Southern Vampire” by Charlaine Harris, the series has been re-written by Academy Award winner Alan Ball who is best known for penning the incredible script for ‘American Beauty’ as well as being the creative force behind the runaway hit SIX FEET UNDER.
Ball describes the series as ‘a rich world filled with unique characters; a world that’s as terrifying as it is hilarious, as well as sexy, generous and profound.” It appears Ball was looking for something a little lighter than SFU though the storylines being attributed to Kwantens character hardly seem light.
Kwanten plays the lead role of Jason Stackhouse alongside his on screen sister played by Academy Award® winner Anna Paquin ( remember THE PIANO. Well she’s all grown up now), whose his life is turned upside down when all his lovers keep turning up dead. Combine this with the new concept that Vampires, thanks to the invention of artificial blood now mix freely with humans and we might just be in for a few surprises.
After all the hard work, things are starting to look good for Ryan stateside. With filming about to wrap on ‘Don’t Fade Away’ costarring Mischa Barton and Ja Rule and directed by Luke Kasdan, nephew of Lawrence Kasdan ( The Big Chill) Kwanten admits it’s hard not be come a little star-struck at times. Still, on top of his new small screen role, Ryan is currently reading scripts for future projects as well as penning his own scripts. Having already auctioned off the rights to his first script, he continues to work on his next screenplay.
