Festival¹s epic drama VINCERE shortlisted for 2010 Oscars

September 29th 2009 15:06

The 2009 ITALIAN FILM FESTIVAL is in full swing just as VINCERE, the historical drama that launched the 10th annual LAVAZZA ITALIAN FILM FESTIVAL, has been shortlisted by Italy¹s motion picture association, ANICA, as the country¹s official entry in the category of Best Foreign Language Film at the 2010 Academy© Awards.

Directed by renowned auteur Marco Bellocchio (GOOD MORNING, NIGHT), VINCERE tells the tragic, yet compelling story of Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini¹s first wife, Ida Dalser, whom he tried to erase from the pages of history. Brilliantly shot and featuring a haunting performance from Giovanna Mezzogiorno (FACING WINDOW) in the central role, VINCERE follows the struggle of Ida in her quest to be acknowledged as the wife of the man she once loved.

Along with the Giuseppe Tornatore¹s lavishly produced Sicilian tale, BAARIA, VINCERE is the hotly tipped favourite to win this prestigious nomination.

Since its debut at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Palme d¹Or, VINCERE has become Italy¹s most exported film of the year and the only Italian movie to be recently invited to both the Toronto and Telluride Film Festivals. To date, VINCERE has been sold to approximately 30 territories, including the United States, and following its recent Toronto outing, a bidding war is underway for the U.K. rights. In its native Italy, VINCERE took over $3 million USD at the box office. The Australian distribution rights are owned by Palace Films.

Australian audiences can view this poignant masterpiece at the LAVAZZA ITALIAN FILM FESTIVAL, which is currently screening in Sydney and Melbourne, with other states to follow.
