NUMBER OF US TITLES FALLS BY 21 PER CENT
According to Screen Digest, the number of films produced globally fell by 3 per cent in 2008, the first annual decline for five years. US output fell even more sharply, down 21 per cent, from 656 to 520 titles. In contrast, India recorded a 14 per cent increase to 1,325 titles. Australia also saw a rise, producing 34 titles compared to 30 the previous year, and moving up the global rankings to number 24.
Although India leads the world in the number of films produced and released, the US still accounts for over half of the world's investment in film production and has the highest domestic box office share (97 per cent).
