Inspirational Brothers to Give Lecture.
Brothers Anh and Khoa Do will deliver the Hector Crawford Memorial Lecture on the Conferences opening morning on Wednesday, 18 November.
The brothers arrived in Australia as refugees with their parents on a fishing boat from Vietnam in 1980. From this traumatic beginning the family established themselves in Bankstown in the west of Sydney. Against the odds both brothers went on to gain a university education before carving out careers in the entertainment industry. In a number of firsts for the Hector Crawford Lecture, Anh and Khoa are the youngest speakers, the first from a Vietnamese cultural background and the first to co-deliver.
Older brother Anh (32) is best known as one of Australias most popular stand-up comedians winning numerous awards for his work, including Sydney Comedian of the Year. His has been a frequent guest on television shows such as Thank God Youre Here, Rove and Dancing With The Stars. As an actor he has starred in the feature he co-wrote with his brother, Footy Legends (2006) alongside Claudia Karvan, and has appeared in Little Fish and Solo.
Khoa Do's (30) first feature, The Finished People (which he co-wrote with Anh) was made on an ultra-low budget and developed out of the community work he was doing with disadvantaged kids. It won the IF Independent Spirit Award and was nominated for two AFI Awards, three Film Critics Circle of Australia Awards and an AWGIE Award. Khoas second feature, Footy Legends was described by Margaret Pomeranz as one of the best Australian films of the year. His latest film, Missing Water, won this years Sydney Film Festivals CRC Award. Khoa has received a number of accolades including Young Vietnamese-Australian of the Year and the Young Australian of the Year Award in 2005.
The Hector Crawford Lecture remembers the contribution of Hector Crawford to the Australian cultural industries. Previous speakers have included Noel Pearson, Hilary McPhee, Harold Mitchell, Dare Jennings, Sandra Levy, Peter Garrett and Noni Hazlehurst.
