IF AWARDS ANNOUNCED.

Thursday night saw the announcement of the 2009 If Awards at Sydneys Luna Park to end the first day of the SPAA (Screen Producers Associationof Australia) conference.
Samson and Delilah an unconventional love story set in outback Australia turned out to be the biggest success story of recent years taking home the top 5 Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress and Script as well as Best Music.
Balibo, the story of five journalists murdered by foriegn troops in the leadup to the invasion of East Timor by Indonesia in 1975 would normally have been favourite to take home many of the major awards, but was only able to pick up Best Sound and Best Editing.
Adam Elliot began the awards season which stretches thorugh to mid-March next year culminating in the Academy Awards by picking up best production design for his claymation masterpeice Mary and Max while Andrew Commis took home the lone award for Beautiful Kate with Best Cinematography.
Baz Lurhman was presented with the Living Legend award for his outstanding success over the past two decades. From Strictly Ballroom to Romeo and Juliet, Moulin Rouge and the recent epic Australia, Baz has divided and united critics and audiences alike with his unique vision and stylistic direction. Yet no one can deny the pictures he creates are amazing peices of work on a scale that will soon be just another part of cinema history.
The SPAA conference will announce the winner of their DigiSpaa competition over the coming days.

Best music video: Sway Sway Baby – Short Stack – Dan Reisinger
