June 11-14 2009
This years Lake Placid Film Forum is gearing up for another year of premieres documentaries and retrospectives acknowledging film industries from Quebec, Marathon runners from Transylvania and social commentators from NCPR.
Of the many films screening this year, standouts include a re-screening of the 1991 period piece BLACK ROBE which follows a 17th Century Jesuit priest’s journey from New France to Quebec. This screening is part of a tribute to the Quebec Film Industry as well as a celebration of the Champlain region’s Quadra centennial and will screen the evening of June 11.
Another intriguing film is the Judd Erlich directed documentary about a group of runners from Transylvania in Romania that arrived in New York in 1970 for the first running of the New York Marathon. Erlich takes an affectionate look at the first generation Jewish immigrant Fred Lebow who organised the trip for these runners and also goes to great lengths to explain how a scrappy run around Central Park turned into a showpiece of the five boroughs and now attracts thousands of runners form all over the world.
For those acquainted with North Country Public Radio, look forward to an insightful study of the humorist and social commentator Garrison Keillor. Keillor has created a world where fact and fiction are often unable to be separated. Audiences will be able to take the journey with Keillor and Emmy award winning producer and director Peter Rosen as Garrison creates one of America’s favourite fictional places – Lake Wobegon. The film will be screening on the final day of the forum June 14, 3pm at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts and
Having their New York Premiere at this year’s forum is the feature length ensemble piece TRAILERPARK adapted from a collection of short stories by Author Laureate Russell Banks. Created shot and directed by senior and junior students at the University of Ohio this film’s success is not only in the finished product, but also in the efforts these students have gone to create the schools first ever feature length film. Normally students from the school of Media and Arts Studies would create 5 short films, selecting scripts, forming small production companies, holding casting calls and recruit crew members in the winter before production and post production in the spring. For the first feature, these students managed to raise through major fundraising efforts the US$45,000 needed to fund the film and even managed to build their own trailer park for the film. The student’s efforts alone are a definite inspiration for struggling independent filmmakers. www.trailerparkmovie.com
Another part of the growing success of the forum is the ‘Sleepless in Lake Placid’ 24 hour film making competition between local colleges from the area. At present Syracuse, Ohio, Ithaca, and Burlington have accepted the challenge to compete for the Robin Pell Emerging Filmmaker Award. Now in its third year, the competition will take place over the weekend of the forum with two more universities still to be accepted into this year’s competition.
This year’s silent film retrospective focuses on two f the silent eras greatest stars in Rudolph Valentino and Gloria Swanson. BEYOND THE ROCKS was shot in 1922 and a recently restored print has made its way to the organisers of Lake Placid and will be accompanied on the Palace Theatres antique 1926 Robert Morton Theatre Organ by the world renowned theatre organist Jeff Barker.
