World Film Festivals - by SimonC

LITTLE BIG SHOTS IS BACK!

May 19th 2009 15:25
Following its huge success in 2008, Little Big Shots, Melbourne’s International Film Festival for Kids, is returning to the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) and ArtPlay for a fifth year in 2009.

A truly international festival, Little Big Shots includes over 90 films from 25 countries as far-reaching as Russia to Argentina, Estonia to Bangladesh and Finland to South Africa. Festival director, Chloe Boulton believes, “The festival is the perfect way for kids to see great stories from all over the world that would never otherwise make it to Australia. The themes and ideas covered in the films are incredibly engaging and relevant to the lives of all children.”

The festival also features a 10-member children’s jury. On May 3, 2009 these children will come together to watch and vote on films in two categories: the best Australian adult-made film and the best Australian child-made film. The winning films will have the honour of being screened at the Little Big Shots launch on May 31, 2009 at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image.

The idea to stage a major Melbourne international children’s film festival was originally conceived by Media Giants in 2004. Five years later, Little Big Shots has become its very own not-for-profit organisation dedicated to enhancing the media literacy of young people, fostering children’s creativity and showcasing the very best in filmmaking for, by and about kids.

Little Big Shots is now Australia’s major stand-alone kids’ film festival - a niche Australian event. With its focus on short films for kids plus plenty of competitions and opportunities for involvement, Little Big Shots is one of the year’s most exciting experiences for kids.

Proudly supported by Media Giants, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, The City of Melbourne, Screen Australia and Film Victoria, Little Big Shots, Melbourne’s International Film Festival for Kids, launches on May 31, 2009 at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne and continues over three school days (June 3 - 5) and the Queen’s Birthday long weekend (June 6 - 8).

An Australia-wide tour follows and includes screenings at Warrnambool’s Fun4Kids Festival (June 28 – July 5), the Adelaide Festival Centre (July 16 - 18), the Sydney Opera House (September 9 - 13) and Kyneton Town Hall (October 21). The program then tours internationally to Singapore and South America.

History

The idea to stage a major Melbourne international children’s film festival was originally conceived by Media Giants in 2004. Five years on, Little Big Shots has become its own not-for-profit organisation dedicated to enhancing the media literacy of young people, fostering children's creativity and showcasing the very best in filmmaking for, by and about kids.

The festival now stands as Australia’s only major stand-alone kids’ film festival - a niche Australian event. With its focus on short films for kids plus plenty of competitions and opportunities for involvement, Little Big Shots is one of the year’s most exciting experiences for kids.

What is Little Big Shots?

Perfect for families and kids aged 2 to 18, Little Big Shots is Australia's major annual and traveling children's film festival. An inspiring, meaningful and fun-filled festival, Little Big Shots features the best in local and international children's shorts, animations, documentaries and, amazingly, child-produced films.

The films screening in Little Big Shots inspire discussion of world cultures, different languages, cultural diversity, emotional intelligence and human values. We guarantee it will make kids laugh, whoop, think and create.

Each year in June, Little Big Shots returns to its Melbourne home town with a whole new crop of juicy screen adventures to amaze and delight. In 2009, the festival's Melbourne season will run from June 3 to 8, at ACMI Cinemas (Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Federation Square) plus selected sessions at ArtPlay on Birrarung Marr.
