FESTIVAL AND SCREENWRITING COMPETITION
Latino film company Maya entertainment has joined forces with movie rental giant BLOCKBUSTER INC® to create a 10 city touring film festival featuring celebrated international films in support of the growing Latino film industry in the U.S. and in addition, the newly formed alliance is also about to launch Project Goldenlight a new national screenwriting competition aimed at assisting up an coming Latin writers.
In a recent Newswire press release, Keith Leopard, director of film content for BLOCKBUSTER ® championed the Hispanic film industry in supporting the festival.
"We recognize the growing Hispanic marketplace and the massive opportunity to further capture those consumers with the launch of these projects. Maya is a great company for us to work with to promote the Latino film category and further Blockbuster's focus on delivering diverse entertainment to a broad consumer base."
Of course there is always a financial side to the story and this new team is no exception with the festival hitting theatres mid year with screenings at MAYA Cinemas throughout the U.S. Following this all films screened will be made available exclusively through BLOCKBUSTER® beginning with the Hispanic Heritage month in September 2009.
But this should not give the negative impression of being solely a commercial prospect for the two companies. The festival will include both domestic and international films that have never screened previously in North America giving much needed exposure to the films and their makers.
"Historically these films might not have been released theatrically and as a result not be seen in the format for which they were created," added Jose Martinez, Jr., executive VP of Maya Entertainment who oversees acquisitions. "We are happy to offer this unique opportunity to filmmakers who want to showcase their work and to afford the U.S. audience an opportunity to enjoy high-quality films."
The second phase is the addition of Project Goldenlight presided over and judged by a panel of industry experts and scheduled to be launched in the North American Spring Season through www.LatinoReview.com . One original screenplay will be chosen to be developed by MAYA Entertainment with a view to providing the winner with a theatrical released film followed up by once again an exclusive rental window with the BLOCKBUSTER ®.
Experts include Moctesuma Esparza (CEO MAYA), Alexis Garcia (Endeavour Talent), Hernany Perla (Development Director – LIONSGATE) Keith Leopard, and Roberto Orci (TV Producer – Eagle Eye, screenwriter- Star Trek). The festival will tour nationally in the U.S.
