MELBOURNE TURKISH FILM FESTIVAL

April 18th 2009 03:33
APRIL 19 – 24 2009

For the first time in Australia, the Turkish community in Melbourne will host the inaugural Melbourne Turkish Film Festival, thanks to the hard working collaboration of The Republic of Turkey Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Antalya Culture and Arts Foundation (AKSAV) and the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI). Never before has the Turkish community attempted to create a festival of their own in the same veil as other European countries many of whom now have regular annual screenings and audience numbers continuing to grow each year.

Over an extended period of time, the Melbourne Film Festival has continued to screen outstanding Turkish films covering all the emotional and universal issues we find throughout the world today but explored in Turkish contexts. Some of the most recent films include Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s Three Monkeys and Huseyin Karabey’s My Marlon and Brando. And with such limited theatrical releases (if any) of these films in Australia screenings such as these are usually the only possible way for them to be seen by Australian audiences.

Over the next six days at the Australian centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) in Melbourne, this new addition to the Australian Festival circuit will screen a wide ranging programme including some of the latest award winning films and of course some old-time classics most of which will be making their Australian debuts. With a dramatic increase in film production in Turkey over the last 15 to 20 years, the industry is continuing to thrive. In 2008 over 52 films were released which according to official figures was double that of previous years and 2009 looks set to be once again another huge year for film production in the Dardenelles.
