World Film Festivals - by SimonC

Melbourne Underground Film Festival (MUFF)2010

August 19th 2010 02:54
MUFF XI will run from August 20 to 28 at three venues across Melbourne; the Classic Cinema in Elsternwick, Thousand Pound Bend in the CBD, and Open Channel's Shed 4 Cinema in the Docklands.

Opening Night at the Classic will see the highly anticipated release of Stuart Simpson's El Monstro Del Mar; a truly unique monster movie set in Melbourne's own Port Phillip Bay. Pitting sexy and treacherous femme fatales against a terrifying creature from the deep, El Monstro is in equal measures funny and fearsome, and is sure to delight fans of 70s exploitation movies.

Closing Night at Shed 4 will present the world premiere of Joseph Sims' debut feature Bad Behaviour. Starring John Jarratt of Wolf Creek in a truly memorable role, Bad Behaviour follows the pursuits of two sibling psychopaths on a collision course with the residents of a sleepy beach town. Sims' debut is a stylish, clever and nail-biting neo-noir that is already gathering a huge industry buzz. Closing Night festivities will be marked by the annual MUFF awards. The top prize in 2010 will be the use of a Canon HD camera, as provided by naming sponsors Canon.

Further highlights include the world premiere of Dean Francis' gripping Road Train, which follows the tradition of Duel and stars Eclipse's Xavier Samuel, and the world premiere of Burlesque, Dominic Deacon's sexy and sinister follow-up to last year's award-winning nunsploitation Bad Habits.

The international features this year include the Johnny Knoxville-produced documentary The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia, which tracks the hilarious exploits of America's last outlaw family. Also from the States we have the award-winning 16mm feature Blondes in the Jungle, a magical adventure shot on location in Honduras, and from further shores abroad MUFF will screen Dark Souls, a highly-acclaimed Norwegian supernatural slasher thriller with plenty of bite.

In addition to MUFF's new film programs, the festival will also present a retrospective on cinematic interpretations of the novels of Bret Easton Ellis, to coincide with the release of his new novel Imperial Bedrooms. Click here for more details.
