METROSCREEN SEMESTER 1 GRADUATES 07

August 10th 2007 06:07
Metroscreen film graduates recently showcase their graduation films at the Chauvel Cinema in Paddington Sydney after 6 months of intensive training that has resulted in some extremely entertaining short films. Cast and crew in all 9 films seemed wholly committed and the films themselves while not necessarily original ideas were all entertaing from beginning to end.

Now for a quick look at the films on display.

The Doll shot primarily in shadow was a simple idea that director Jodin Meyer attempted to exploit with varying results. At times the lighting and shadows seemed to overwhelm the film itself.

Matthew McNamara then took us on a completely different journey with a simple straightforward story of the what a budding filmmaker needs to do to become a success. in The Fare, after working up to 12 hours in a cab, Bobby then heads off to film school to chase his dream. Nicely shot piece that didn’t try to do too much.

Not sure what Matthew Currey was thinking with his special effects in Backtrack but it didn’t quite come off. The camera angles were at times off putting and detracted a little from the story. Matthew may have been trying to create a feeling of tension and unease, but perhaps tried a little too hard.

NO EXIT. Now here was a biting documentary on big business and their lack of humanity. With the new workplace relations laws now established, Joey G Hitten’s interview technique shows a lot of promise and a career in documentary film making looks assured should he choose to follow this path. And the choice of subject hat everyone can relate to in today’s changing world was well chosen

Anyone who has access to the internet will remember the controversy surrounding a private schoolgirls flirtation with the web. Amusing subject that was a very good choice for a graduation film. Simple, amusing storyline, nice direction and ccompetent camerawork. And everyone noticed the glint in the principals eye! Goood choices made throughout by Ciara Rafferty with Linger.

It seems that every film school or short film festival has at least one film dealing with death and with this group Death Island Style was no exeption. Giving the general public an insight into how another culture deals with death and grief and the lack of understanding by western society has been dealt with in a uncomplicated manner by graduating director Mary Kirkness with a genuine performance from the young woman revealing her painful journey as she deals with the death of her father.

Run, also directed by Mary Kikness was a little confusing and seemed to be an attempt to experiment a little with the camera. Not the best film of the evening.

Directed by Michael Warczak, Break used simple lighting techniques a good script to illustrate the different paths two former friends have taken in their lives. All work showed wonderful potential

Probably the best film of the day for entertainment value was The Magician’s Vendetta, a short lifting of the ideas behind the prestige. Nicely directed, well scripted shot and acted. William Zain and the rest of the crew use of angles and lighting make for a great finale to an evening of unexpected pleasure.

Recent graduates Liz Hoy and Catherine Welsh have secured an internship on an ABC Channel 4 production titles ‘The Eternity Man’The Eternity Man is the story of Arthur Stace, the man who chalked 'Eternity' on the streets of Sydney for nearly 40 years.

Metroscreen obviously have taken the time to skill their students in what can at times be an overwhelming entry into the cutthroat world of film. Success can only be achieved with the right support and this evening was a success from every camera angle.
