Movie Piracy within Australia
July 21st 2009 14:16
A quick couple of links on film piracy from a story recently on film piracy. Source found on the SPAA website.
On the 28th June, Channel 7‘s “Sunday Night” program aired a report by Mike Munro on movie piracy. The report, which focused on movie piracy within Australia and the Philippines, discussed:
-Movie piracy and links to organized crime
-Losses to industry
-That it is NOT a victimless crime
-Movie piracy and links to associated crimes
-Movie piracy and terrorist funding (outside of Australia)
AFACT was established in 2004. Their website explains the problems associated with video piracy - "DVD pirates are not merely a product of market forces and entrepreneurship, central to their business model is criminal behavior extending beyond copyright theft. Money laundering, protection rackets, and even violent territorial warfare are all practices not uncommon to piracy business operations."
