MRC's Seniors on Screen

August 8th 2009 12:10
Do you know anyone who is getting towards retiring and not sure what they want to do with all that 'spare time' that they will have. Well here's a chance for seniors to tell their stories through their own eyes. described as an 'Over 50's Club for the Digital Age' this could be their seachange! At 1pm every Friday the Mercury is the place for mature film lovers to meet and socialise with fellow cinephiles.

Date:10 Aug 09 to 4 Dec

External Seniors on Screen comprises a specially curated screening program of films for mature tastes; a series of forums designed to introduce seniors to the fascinating world of cinema and online social networking – and two practical and well-priced filmmaking workshops. The initiative was launched by the Media Resource Centre in 2008.

“What we discovered from our first year was that Adelaide’s seniors have so many wonderful stories to tell about their lives,” says Gail Kovatseff, director of the MRC. “Seniors on Screen acknowledges the enormous creative abilities of this section of the community & provides an avenue for seniors to share their stories with others.”

This year’s program offers Adelaide seniors several ways to learn new skills and get their stories up on the Mercury’s big screen. There’s a Digital Storytelling Workshop from 10 – 13 August ($75 per person) and a Seniors Filmmaking Boot Camp ($100 per person) from 28 September to 2 October. Through these sessions, 14 short films will be produced and screened at the Mercury throughout the Friday films and forum program.

The five-day Seniors Filmmaking Boot Camp is very interactive and covers the basics of filmmaking from scriptwriting to storyboarding, shooting, sound recording & editing. The Digital Storytelling Workshop shows seniors how to create short, personal, multimedia tales about the events, people and places in their own lives.

“The best thing about all of these activities is you don’t need any previous filmmaking experience - not even computer skills, to take part. Just loads of enthusiasm,” says Ms Kovatseff.

Commencing August 14, the Seniors on Screen film program will run 16 different feature films at 1pm every Friday at the Mercury Cinema until 4 December. The screening program starts with the Adelaide premiere of the new Australian film, Salvation, which reunites the team that made the internationally acclaimed Lonely Hearts (1981) - director, Paul Cox and actress Wendy Hughes. The film also features two Australian favourites, Barry Humphries and Charles ‘Bud’ Tingwell. Entry for the Friday film sessions is only $5 for seniors & non-seniors are welcome at standard entry prices ($12 adults/$10 other concessions). As an extra bonus - four of the 16 film sessions will be book-ended by an enlightening forum called Everything You Ever Wanted to know About the Movies (But Were Too Afraid to Ask!) - presented by Adelaide’s premier critical commentator on films and filmmaker himself, Shane McNeil.

“Shane presented this session last year and it was such a huge success we decided to offer it several times in ‘09,” says Ms Kovatseff. “The way it works is that seniors come along at 1pm on a particular Friday and listen to an introduction by Shane of a film which screens from 1.30pm – then there’s a lively discussion afterwards as the film is dissected and debated - and hidden secrets are revealed!! We’ve programmed some terrific films to discuss including Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest, Woody Allen’s Zelig and Nicholas Roeg’s classic – Walkabout. You don’t have to pay extra to attend the forum either – it’s still $5 a film for seniors.”

There’s also one other special forum called I Heard it on Facebook (Friday August 28) – a casual and humorous look at the online world of the internet including dating sites, shopping and ways to keep in touch with family and friends through sites like Twitter and Flickr.

For a copy of the full Seniors on Screen program, phone the MRC on 08 8410 0979 or download the program at www.mrc.org.au or www.mercurycinema.org.au. Bookings are essential for the Digital Storytelling Workshop, the Seniors Filmmaking Bootcamp and I Heard it on Facebook forum.
