'My Winnipeg' tickets up for grabs Sydney FFest 08
May 28th 2008 04:24
Plug into the 55th Sydney Film Festival where the best new films from around the world come to Sydney. With red carpet galas, 135 Australian Premieres, special guests and a program packed with goodies, you'll want to be part of SFF this June. Highlights include the big screen versions of previous Sydney Festival events Lou Reed's Berlin and Eternity Man, as well as the inaugural SFF Official International Competition of 12 outstanding feature films.
SFF has three double passes up for grabs to see My Winnipeg, one of the entries in their Competition, on Wednesday June 11 at 10am. To enter, email your name and phone number to competition@sydneyfestival.or g.au with 'My Winnipeg' in the subject line by 5pm Friday May 30. Only winners will be contacted.
A magical mystery tour of the hometown in Guy Maddin's wildly idiosyncratic imagination, this 'docu-fantasia' as he has coined it, is part fact (but which parts?) and part fusion of melodrama, silent film and travelogue. Structured around an urgent getaway narration 'snowy, sleepwalking Winnipeg... I must leave it, I must leave it...' (which Guy Maddin will perform live in its Australian Premiere screening) and melding found footage with brazen reconstructions, the film builds linkages between the most unlikely collection of archival moments, memories and urban myths: escaping horses frozen into the snow, a turn-of-the-century séance, a three-levelled swimming pool, and a much loved hockey-arena to name just a few. Central though, is the re-enactment of family history, and it is the hilarious sequences with B-movie icon Anne Savage playing Guy's overbearing mother that provide the film with its decidedly crooked spine. Wicked and wildly entertaining, this is autobiography at its creative best. CS
Australian Premiere.
Live Narration performed by Guy Maddin on Tuesday 10 June only.
Winner Best Canadian Feature at Toronto International Film Festival 2007.
Dir Guy Maddin
Scr Guy Maddin, George Toles
Prod Jody Shapiro, Phyllis Laing
With Darcy Fehr, Ann Savage, Amy Stewart
Country Canada
Duration 80 mins
Distributor Madman Entertainment
World Sales/Australian distributor Madman
