NEW HOLLYWOOD
Following our season of Easy Rider, we start an exciting look at the films that came in its wake: the revolutionary New Hollywood cinema of the late 1960s/early 70s. We begin with a very rare screenings of Dennis Hopper's post-Easy Rider feature The Last Movie (u/c 18 ), also starring Peter Fonda, Sam Fuller and Kris Kristofferson,

Martin Scorsese's first feature length film Who's That Knocking at Your Door (u/c 18 ) starring a very young and very Catholic-guilt-ridden Harvey Keitel.

Throughout March and April are more New Hollywood films, including early features by Rocky director John Avildsen, Francis Ford Coppola and Peter Bogdanovich.

AMERICAN MOVIE TREASURES -- SURVIVING DOWN UNDER.
American Movie Treasures is an on-going program of rare gems from the collections of US archives, and the work of the US National Film Preservation Board. We begin with Surviving Down Under: a look at Hollywood films whose surviving and restoration is in part due to prints and negatives having survived in the collection of Australia's National Film and Sound Archive.

This includes two early, rarely seen films from Ben Hur director William Wyler: the silent western Hard Fists and the romantic comedy The Love Trap (both u/c 18 ). American Movie Treasures is presented with the support of the Embassy of the United States.

VELVET CINEMA
Our sample of the cinema that emerged after Communist regimes fell in Europe in the 1980s continues with Escape from Liberty Cinema (u/c 18 )(1990), the Polish Purple Rose of Cairo that follows a strike by the on-screen talent at a local cinema.

Art house hit director István Szabó rarely-seen view of post-Communist Hungary in Sweet Emma, Dear Boebe - Sketches, Nudes (1992)

AUSTRALIAN CINEMA
The AFSA pasys tribute to Solrun Hoaas with Aya (PG), a moving account of the
Japanese brides who came back with Australian soldiers from occupied Japan.

A Canberra theatrical premiere of director Mario Andreacchio's unreleased Paradise Found (M) kicks off our Post---Impressions season and its look at stories of modern art in Australian cinema, with 24's Keifer Sutherland playing painter Gauguin swapping Parisian bourgeois normality for a Pacific sea change.
