FILMMAKERS INTRODUCE COURTYARD SCREENING OF MALCOLM
The NFSA is about to present a limited season of one of Australian 1980s cinema's most loved films, with a brand new print from the NFSA's Deluxe/Kodak Project.
Tram-fixated Malcolm (Colin Friels), ex-con Frank (John Hargreaves), and his nothing-but-spunk girlfriend Judith (Lindy Davies) become the most effective bank-robbing gang since the Kellys, in the multi-AFI award winning film. Filmmakers Nadia Tass and David Parker will join us in the NFSA's courtyard for an outdoor screening of Malcolm, this coming Saturday, 9 January. If you didn't get to see it on the big scren when it first came out, now is your chance Canberrans.

ELASTIC REALITY: AUSTRALIAN ANIMATION IN THE 21ST CENTURY
Elastic Reality -Mary and Max
The Elastic Reality exhibition celebrates Australian successes in the field of animation. A collection of images taken from the films of Australia's most prominent creators of animation can be seen in the Foyer Gallery. It Includes work from Academy Award winner Adam Elliot's feature film Mary and Max, and director of Australian animation classics Blinky Bill and Dot and the Kangaroo, Yorum Gross.
To mark the beginning of NFSA's Elastic Reality exhibition, the NFSA will begin a month of daytime screenings of acclaimed Australian animation. The series begins with Grendel, Grendel Grendel; by Alex Stitt, the creator of Life Be In It. Grendel, Grendel, Grendel is a twisted take on the Beowulf story, with voices by Peter Ustinov and Keith Michell (Thursday 14 Jan, 2pm).
The screening will be preceded by a selection of Alex Stitt's short animations, from the NFSA Collection

EASY RIDERS AND OUTSIDERS.
Arc presents a limited season of Dennis Hopper's 1969, Easy Rider, screening in a new print to mark its 40th anniversary. Later in January, we'll celebrate the definitive 1960's outsider movie with a selection of other classic outlaw motorcycle films, including the 1983 documentary Hells Angels Forever, featuring the music of Jerry Garcia, and Roger Corman's
1966 Wild Angel, also starring Peter Fonda. On Saturday 23 January at 2pm, actor-director Sandy Harbutt will also introduce his 1974 Australian classic biker movie/political thriller Stone.

Our selection of naughty films from the Depression and Hollywood's 'Pre-Code' era continues this Saturday with Greta Garbo and Clark Gable in director Robert Z. Leonard's 1931 expressionist social fable Susan Lennox: Her Fall and Rise. (Please note: due to poor print quality, this film replaces the previously advertised feature Ann Vickers).In coming weeks look out for James Cagney in The Public Enemy (Sat 16 Jan, 4.30pm) and Busby Berkeley's The Gold Diggers of 1933 (Sat 23 Jan, 4.30pm).

Outdoor screenings will continue every Saturday night in January and February in the stunning Art Deco courtyard, with all films presented on 35mm. BYO food is welcome this year (please no picnic blankets and eskies due to limited space, and no glass where possible in the interests of public safety).
Murrumbateman winery Four Winds will be in the courtyard before screening.
The premiere season of recent films that have passed Canberra by includes The Fox and the Child (Thu 7 Jan, 2pm), the new film from the director of The March of the Penguins, plus Steven Soderburgh's The Girlfriend Experience (Sun 10 Jan, 2pm).
Celebrate the career of actor 'Bud' Tingwell, with one of his personal favourite roles: Bruce Beresford's tough armoured car heist thriller Money Movers (Sat 9 Jan, 2pm).
Continue the celebration of the Yellow Brick Road with Two-Lane Blacktop (Sun 10 Jan, 4.30pm): Monte Hellman's renowned post-Beat, post-Modern journey down the back roads of Kansas, described by Richard Linklater as the 'purest American road movie ever' and starring James Taylor, Dennis Wilson and Warren Oates.
Two-Lane Blacktop will be preceded by Jackie Farkas's acclaimed but little-seen Australian short film The Illustrated Auschwitz (Aust., 1992, 13 mins, 16mm, screens courtesy of AFTRS).
