Opening Night Films-Russian Resurrection

July 30th 2009 02:39
There’s less than a month until the new wave of Russian cinema hits Australian shores at the 6th annual Russian Resurrection Film Festival, kicking off its national tour in Melbourne on Wednesday 19th August, opening Sydney Friday 21st Aug, Brisbane Thursday 3rd Sep, Adelaide Wednesday 9th Sep, Perth Thursday 10th Sep and Canberra Thursday 17th Sep.

Not only is the line-up of films bigger and better this year, offering a smorgasbord of multi-award winning and box office smashing films, the festival also has a few aces up its sleeve including three special events that are sure to truly immerse you in ‘reel’ Russian delights.

Opening Night Film and Parties!

Each capital city will again play host to the renowned Russian Resurrection Film Festival Opening Night Parties, immersing guests in the delights of Russian hospitality. On the menu will be a delectable array of blinis, balalaika, Baltika Beer and the legendary Vodka cocktails that will keep you dancing all night long.

In Sydney, audiences will be enthralled to see Vladimir Bortko’s epic film Taras Bulba, based on the novel by one of Russia’s most celebrated writers Nikolai Gogol, recognising the 2009 bicentennial celebrations of his birth. Setting the highest box office breaking records to date, Taras Bulba is epic historical cinema exploding with the battle cries of 16th century Ukrainian Cossacks, awash with intrigue, romance and the noble pursuit of defence of the motherland. With whetted appetite, guests will then be whisked away to the infamous Coachman Russian Restaurant in Surry Hills to celebrate Opening Night in true Russian style (transport to the venue will be provided).

Melbourne and Adelaide will open with the world premiere and return of Karen Shakhnazarov (Director of 2008 Opening Night film, Vanished Empire) with his highly anticipated film Ward № 6 (2009), a black comedy full of riddles, paradoxes and anxieties, based on a story by Anton Chekhov, Brisbane & Canberra will open with Andrei Kravchuk’s highly anticipated film Admiral, while Perth audiences will be enthralled to see Hipsters (directed by Valery Todorovsky), the colourful new musical and winner of the 2009 NIKA for Best Film. Set in 1950s Soviet Russia, Hipsters celebrates the misfit sub-culture of a group of youths and their love for Jazz and American Culture.

Awards
Everyone wants to be a critic, and for the first time, this year the Festival will be giving audiences the chance to vote for their favourite film! See if your choice for Best Film actually matches the critics? Leading Australian film critics will vote for the Russian Resurrection Critics' Award for Best New Film, and you too can be part of all the voting when choosing the Filmink Audience Award for Best Film.

Go online at www.filmink.com.au/vote to decide if a colourful musical comedy is more of a crowd pleaser than an epic historical film! Prizes include a 12 month membership to the Palace Movie Club, Palace Movie Passes, a Filmink Subscription & Clubink Membership to see all the latest films, a selection of limited release DVD’s, (including films from past festivals) & some Vodka to complement your viewing pleasure.
