In the late 90’s, comic book artist and writer Jamie Hewlett met brit-pop rocker Damon Albarn of ‘Blur’ and a friendship was formed. Sometime later, fuelled by various viewings of trashy television on offer from MTV the idea for ‘The Gorillaz’ was born. Upon release of their debut album, they had cemented a reputation for musical and visual innovation, while their ever more inventive videos and sublime live shows gathered critical praise. With global sales in excess of 12 million - Gorillaz became the most successful virtual band ever.
From 2000 to 2006, filmmaker Ceri Levy filmed along side the creators behind the scenes from first drawings, animations, writing sessions through to the faces behind the voices of Murdoc, 2D, Noodle and Russel Hobbs. Some interesting characters came along for the ride including Dennis Hopper, De La Soul, Ibrahim Ferrer (Buena Vista Social Club), Dangermouse, Dan the Automater, D12 and Neneh Cherry.
The end result is Bananaz, a unique and collaborative insight into anonymity in the face of global stardom. Where the former face of a successful rock band can embrace his musical flare for experimentation behind the mask of a cartoon character and what this means when the world wants to know more…
"Every generation throws up some kind of iconic toss. I guess this is it"
Murdoc Niccals, Gorillaz
"The Great Rock n' Roll Swindle of our generation"
Jason Solomons, The Observer

PLUS DON'T FORGET THIS MONDAY NIGHT:
The first Sydney screening of:
Plus an exclusive audience Q&A with director Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland) live down-the-line from London after the movie!
Handsome, unflappable U.S. Congressman Stephen Collins (Ben Affleck) is the future of his political party: an honorable appointee who serves as the chairman of a committee overseeing defense spending. All eyes are upon the rising star to be his party’s contender for the upcoming presidential race, until his research assistant/mistress is brutally murdered and all the buried secrets come tumbling out. McCaffrey (Russell Crowe) has the dubious fortune of both an old friendship with Collins and a ruthless editor, Cameron (Oscar® winner Helen Mirren), who has assigned him to investigate. As he and partner Della (Rachel McAdams) try to uncover the killer’s identity, McCaffrey steps into a cover-up that threatens to shake the nation’s power structures. And in a town of spin-doctors and wealthy politicos, he will discover one truth: when billions are at stake, no one’s integrity, love or life is ever safe.
“A sterling thriller, benefiting from admirable convictions and an arguable return to form by Russell Crowe”.
EMPIRE
“This is exhilarating, compulsive storytelling and looks likely to be one of the year’s cinematic highlights”
