With the latest dance crazes sweeping the globe what with SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE, SO and SO's GOT TALENT and other manic performances put there, its perfect timing for the Reel Dance Film Festival
2008 marks the 5thbiennial festival , which will tour Australia from the beginning of May until early August. To celebrate this electrifying celebration of dance, visit the official brand new website at www.reeldance.org.au which is being launched today.
A unique event, ReelDance celebrates the fusion of dance and film by showcasing the best contemporary local and international dance shorts and movies, as well as incorporating an exciting range of live programs that invite audience participation, including workshops and forums for dance artists and filmmakers.
The Sydney base for the 2008 Festival will be Carriageworks in Eveleigh, the city¹s superb new home for contemporary arts. In Melbourne, the event will span three venues; The Australian Centre for Moving Image (ACMI), Arts House at the North Melbourne Town Hall and Dancehouse in Carlton North.
This year¹s Festival shines the spotlight on how dance, in its many guises, influences and enhances our everyday lives, by offering an eclectic programme that will have even those of us with two Œleft feet¹ dreaming of tripping the Œlight fantastic¹!
Seven distinct screening sessions will form part of the 2008 line-up, which will culminate in the REELDANCE AWARDS for Australian and New Zealand shorts and documentaries to be presented in Sydney on 18th May. Another program highlight will be a touring SWING CLUB that will feature a live band performing amidst projected archival swing dance footage, replete with dancing demonstrations.
And Melbourne audiences will be able to enjoy GET A GRIP L¹ART DU DEPLACEMENT, which will have a season at Arts House, North Melbourne Town Hall. Part live-action and part film, GET A GRIP, explores the art of ŒLe Parkour¹, which tests the physical, mental and cultural limitations of human movement. This live show is linked to a screening of YAMAKASI at ACMI.
The Festival is also delighted to announce that renowned UK dance screen artists, Katrina McPherson and Simon Fildes, will visit Sydney and Melbourne and Campbelltown with their Move-Me.COM Booth a touring installation which adapts the photo-booth environment, allowing dance enthusiasts to create their own short dance films, which can then be uploaded onto Move-Me.COM¹s award-winning website.
The Festival¹s seven screening programmes are:
GLOBAL SHORTS 1 THIS DANCING LIFE
A program of shorts that celebrates dance and movement via a range of
everyday situations, from social dancing and HIP HOP to BALLROOM and TANGO.
GLOBAL SHORTS 2 MUSIC: DANCE: IMAGE
Dance-based German music video clips from MUVI at Oberhausen Film Festival,
clips from the UK¹s Antenna program and local shorts that re-define the
boundaries of music video.
GLOBAL SHORTS 3 THE ART OF MOVING
Here we experience how technical wizardry, combined with human movement, can
create poetic and challenging celluloid magic.
DANCE DOCUMENTARIES
2 documentaries that examine cases where artistry survived despite the odds,
including JOSEPHINE BAKER: BLACK DIVA IN A WHITE MAN¹S WORLD (Germany) and
FROM MAMBO TO HIP HOP: A SOUTH BRONX TALE (USA).
CONTEMPORARY DANCE ON SCREEN
A showcase of the best in international contemporary dance on screen.
THE REELDANCE AWARDS
This section will screen the films of the finalists in the ReelDance Awards
for new Australian and New Zealand dance film.
KIDREELS
Jointly curated by ReelDance and Cinedans in Amsterdam, this program, which
is aimed at 3-11 year olds, features children dancing in diverse cultural
settings.
ŠAND ALSO SCREENING IN MELBOURNE:
FEATURE FILMS
Three features will screen as part of the Festival at ACMI in Melbourne and
will include BREAKIN¹ (USA), BREAKIN¹ 2: ELECTRIC BOOGALOO and YAMAKASI
LES SAMOURAIS DE TEMPS MODERNES (France).
