Rhode Island FF 10-15 August

July 30th 2010 05:05

Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIIFF)kicks off its 14th annual event August 10 - 15th, with films and filmmakers arriving from across the globe. RIIFF is New England's largest, most prestigious AND ONLY OSCAR-QUALIFYING film festival. Ranked as one of the Top 12 Film Festivals in the United States, RIIFF serves as an annual showcase for international and independent film within the Rhode Island and southern New England area. This year, over 200 narrative, documentary and short films from 53 countries will be screened over a six-day period in locations throughout the state of Rhode Island. The films were selected from a record entry base of over 4,200 submissions and represent 35 World and 23 US/North American Premieres.

Throughout its successful 14-year run, RIIFF has received both national and international recognition. It was listed in the Providence Business News as one of the Top 25 year-round events in Rhode Island. The Boston Globe's Newenglandtravel.com named RIIFF as one of the top five New England film festivals. And, it was listed in Moviemaker Magazine as one of the "Top 25 Festivals Worth the Entry Fee." The 2010 Festival promises to continue this proud tradition of excellence as New England's premiere film festival.

For the first time, the Festival's Opening Night festivities will be held at the VMA Arts & Cultural Center, the elegant and historic 1,900-seat theater located in the state's capital city.

"Without question, this has been a year of change and growth for the Festival," said RIIFF Executive Director George T. Marshall. "Not only have entries been up over last year, but we will be introducing filmmakers and attendees to our new home at the historic VMA Arts & Cultural Center in downtown Providence. We intend to make this Festival one for the books."

RIIFF has been accredited by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) as an Oscar-Qualifying festival in the Short Film category. RIIFF is one of only 65 festivals worldwide (out of over 7,000) with Academy accreditation, and the only Festival in New England. To pay tribute to this unique status, the Opening Night has become a crowd-pleasing "Salute to the Art of the Short Film."

In addition, the Opening Night festivities will showcase the World Premiere of the new documentary by David Bettencourt and G. Wayne Miller, Behind the Hedgerow: Eileen Slocum and the Meaning of Newport Society. The film offers an exclusive and intimate glimpse into the private world of aristocratic Newport society. It will be of special interest to the entire Rhode Island community while also having national and international appeal.
