World Film Festivals - by SimonC

RHODE ISLAND FILM FESTIVAL CALL.

January 13th 2009 08:00
The folks at the Rhode Island Film Festival are looking forward to another splendid year after ending 2008 with the promotion of Demetria James Carr to the position of Managing Director. And don’t forget that the early bird entry date for the 2009 festival is January 15. Although the festival runs from August 4 – 9 2009, if you want your film screened now is the time to get your submission ready. With RIIFF one of only 63 festivals out of around 7000 worldwide receiving Academy recognition it could be the one that sends your career into orbit (more information later).

After working with the festival for the last 3 years, Mrs. Carr will now oversee the creation of events as well as participate in the marketing and developing community awareness as part of her ongoing role with RIIFF.

"Her enthusiasm and attention to detail have broadened our Festival's visibility and appeal in the local, national, and international independent film communities since 2005”, stated George T. Marshall, RIIFF Executive Director.

Another addition to the festival this year is the expansion of their outreach and social network sites available to the general public to assist in learning more about the festival. The creation of these new outlets also allows anyone to share their latest projects whether it be an emerging idea, a work in progress or completed project.

Providing a platform for filmmakers is the RIIFF Filmmaker Blog which is a great way to keep up with your favourite RIIFF films and directors, find out what films are up for distribution and where you may be able to get a copy of that film you would love to see again. Most filmmakers are great in keeping everyone in the loop so the search is made all the more easier. Access is available through the RIIFF website.

Another addition is the podcasts containing interviews with the filmmakers that have attended over the years. After the first visit, you will be dying to come back to check out the latest offerings from Tony Pennacchia and Paul Elsnau.

In a recent press release , RIIFF explains their festival.

The Rhode Island International Film Festival, a leading platform that promotes independent film and video, is calling for entries to its 13th Anniversary Festival. The Festival will take place August 4-9, 2009 in the capital city, Providence and throughout scenic Rhode Island. Of special note is that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has elected to recognize the Rhode Island International Film Festival as a qualifying festival for the Short Films category for the Annual Academy Awards. With more than 7,000 film festivals worldwide, only 63 have this recognition.

The Festival is accepting shorts as well as feature- length films and videos. Films and videos must have been produced after 2006. The Rhode Island International Film Festival is one of only five broadly focused, independent festivals in New England accepting works of any type (dramatic, documentary, experimental, animation), on any subject matter, and in any genre. Filmmakers may enter their films either in competition or out of competition. Films in competition will be judged by a jury of distinguished industry professionals, peers and film fans. Whether in or out of competition, all films will be eligible for Audience Fest Favorites awards (The Viola M. Marshall Awards)

The Festival offers an artistic exchange as well as opportunities for the global creative community that are not available in the established entertainment industry. It is designed to foster contact among film directors, producers, distributors, backers and audiences.
The RIIFF group is easy to join especially if you have joined the ever growing Facebook community.
